Discounting novelty records ie: Mr Blobby, Black Lace, Westlife etc... I think I would like to nominate Paul Youngs cover version of "Love will tear us apart" by Joy Division. He managed to suck all the passion and meaning out, leaving a bland and empty pile of dog-poo behind!!

You can hardly hear Britneys voice in that song.

Most of that corny stuff we used to like in the 60s - makes me embarrassed to remember them (and I still know all the words)
e.g.: Doowadiddydiddy dum diddy do
There's a kind of hush / no milk today etc - most of Hermann's Hermits,
most of the Tremeloes, Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich, most of things by people like Freddy and the Dreamers, Gerry and the Pacemakers and others who were even cornier.
Or the Bubble Gum things that came out in the early 70s. Tommy James, etc. etc.
Listening to stuff which seemed way out in those days was far more worth while - the Who, or the bands round people like Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker - now that *hasn't* dated. They make you proud to have been around when they were first on the market. In Vinyl.
What was the question again? Oh yes. The. Worst. Record.
"Grandad" by Clive Dunn.

Discounting novelty records - the worst has to be that cover of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers classic Under The Bridge by All Saints. It was one of those "why did you do it" records. Whenever it was played in the pub you could see everyone listening to the intro wondering whether it was going to be the original or the cover, and then you could see everyone groaning when those wailing cats started "singing", or rather ruining, one of the best songs in the world.

I'd say Millenium prayer by cliff richard. I'm not a big fan of cliff anyway, but before this, the worst I could say about his music is that it was bland, but Millenium prayer was just awful, the sort of song you actively avoid, rather than a song you can just ignore.

Not all remakes are awful. What about "Sailing" by Rod Stewart? That was a remake of the same song by the Sutherland Brothers. The who? Remember them? No. But Rod's version is memorable. And I really liked that mid-80s remake of "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to", although I can't remember now who sang it. And Bruce Willis's "Under the Boardwalk" was good too.

I thought we'd established that the worst record ever made was "In The Year 2525" by Zaeger and Evans?

Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin - although Colin Blunstone did "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" with the same Dave Stewart, so you weren't far off.
