Were you 'reared' or 'raised' ?
Tonsil Revenge (PG) Started conversation Feb 16, 2002
I've been running into this minor linguistic irritation lately.
If your parental units tolerated you from the moment you were brought forth until the day you waddled out into the workforce or that delayed maturity known as higher education, have they 'raised' or 'reared' you?
Or is this an invalid notation that should only be used to indicate animal husbandry or agriculture?

Would you like to be brought up again?
Or is that a secondary motion?

I dragged out my beloved dictionary and discovered (to my surprise) that reared is the more formal term for bringing up children, though raised is often used. I always thought 'reared' was more like dialect... always hear that word in my head with a southern accent.
Thanks for making me look, Tonsil.

de nada.
I agree with you. To me, it has connotations of bad drivers and horses frightened by a fox or m'lady's aftershave. Or naughty jokes about fellows from Greece...

*I* wasn't gonna go there. I'm a respectable wench, ya know.
But it DOES bring visions to mind of a boot in the rear, and how often parents have to apply it, in order to raise their children to resemble human beings.

In my case, it were a belt. Hmmm, a beet o' volk entymolologie there.
That could also explain the linguistic taffy of 'heart-rendering'.
Or 'jury-rigged'.
Ohm a gud gurl, Oi am!

I wasn't raised, or reared, or brought up. I grew up. Strangely enough, I would apply all three of those terms when talking about other people, but they don't sound right when talking about myself.
And 'reared' definitely applies more to animals in my mind, than to people, especially farm animals. Or maybe that's just the off-colour jokes sticking in my mind.

Fabt, I assume you've tried unplugging the key board and gently prying the keys off and seeing if there is any old coffee or muffin sutck underneath?
I found the word 'reared' used with reference to fly maggots in a
Danish forensic pathology site. I thought it was a bit unscientific in usage.
