A Conversation for Ask h2g2
Attention Guitarists!

Having seen several rather pathetic entries on guitar tab float throught peer review and other places, I've decided to write my own.
I'm using commonly known songs to demonstrate different techiques, i.e. "Whole Lotta Love" for palm muting, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for left hand muting.
I still need some songs that demonstrate sliding, hammer-ons and pull offs, and trills. Have any ideas? I'd like to use songs or riffs that are popular, instantly recongnizable, and commonly played by beginning guitarists.
Thanks for your help.

Most 'classic' rock guitarists will have used those techniques somewhere, Jimi Hendrix is the obvious one. Finding examples of techniques for lead guitar is a lot hard than for rythym, as your probably know.
Trilling - The intro to 'Foxy Lady' by Hendrix has an excellent, unmistakable, example of trilling.
Hammer-ons - the main bit from 'sweet home alabama' by lynyrd skynrd has hammer ons in it. You'll have to listen to the record, and maybe learn the song (it's really easy, the first song i ever learned) to get what i mean.
Perhaps i'll get my vinyl out later and have a look through...

Foxy Lady is an excellent suggestion. Thanks!
Playing "sweet home alabama" in my head, it sounds like there are pull-offs, as well. I don't know if the song is well known enough, but i'll use it if I can't come up with something better.
What about bends?

Yeah, that's good. It has hammer-ons and pulloffs, too.
How about slides? Radiohead's "anyone can play guitar" has some good, recognizable sliding. But I doubt it's famous enough.

hmm. The "Hey Joe" (Hendrix version) solo has some slides... Not a very good example though.
Or do you mean slide-guitar slides? In that case I'd suggest "For You Blue" (Beatles)

Sweet home Alabama is not well known enough? No gig is complete without it.

Well if it's known by British women in Germany, that clinches it.
I don't mean slide guitar. I mean finger slides on a normal guitar.

This is the entry, by the way. It's still rather rough but if you want to have a look and make comments, i'll certainly listen.

Good examples of all techniques, try Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, and even Dave Gilmore. Plenty of examples there I feel.

The trouble with Vai, Satriani, and all those noodly types, is their playing tends to be far too technical for the beginner. Plus, if you asked someone on the street to whistle a steve vai riff, chances are they'd have no idea what you're talking about. That's why I'm looking for the most memorable songs in existence to illustrate guitar tablature.

I just need to add the songs and I think it'll be ready for PR. Horray for the new system!
