Gnomon - time to move on Started conversation Nov 15, 2005
There is one researcher on h2g2 who is so evil that I have vowed I will never read anything they have written. Should I out of politeness inform of this, or should I just go ahead and ignore them?

... Should I out of politeness inform THEM of this ...

Only if they're addressing you directly (expecting a response from you), otherwise you'll only get yourself insulted and raise your blood pressure by trying not to sink to their level.
(Unless of course it's me you're trying to avoid... In which case, it won't work! )

If you really dislike this person that much, then why are you worried about being polite to them?
And if it's me, I'll

If it's who I think it is, you'll only get told you're ignoring them because you can't handle the truth, you're a gullible so-and-so who's swallowing everything those evil bbc employees are telling you... Oh, and didn't you know, the BBC employed the man on the grassy knoll!

Good point, Whisky. But it won't raise my blood pressure, because when I say ignore, I mean ignore. I am not going to read any comments written by this evil person any more.

I wouldn't. Although it can be annoying. I've been ignoring one person on here for over 3 years now and they still don't seem to have realised that I haven't replied to a single one of their posts in all that time.
However, my blood pressure is a lot lower now that I don't get drawn into pointless arguments with them and it generally makes those threads where both of us end up a lot less spikey, which keeps everyone else happy as well!

I find that I have no problems ignoring a few people around here. In that I do read what is said, and if it has no bearing on the current line of chat, I disreguard it. If there is a portion that's relevant, I might comment.
And maybe I'm just getting too old, or thick skinned, but I have yet to have a comment aimed at me that bothered me in the least.

If it's who I think it is then I've been ignoring them for something like four years now. And I told them, don't think I was very polite about it though...

I suppose if you are sensitive to offending the 'who-evers', a brief post to their PS might be an idea. Something simple like "As I find you to be typically offensive or a bother, I will be ignoring you and your posts, where-ever I see them." Nothing too nasty, just a simple declaration.

There's is no point in telling them.
What exactly do you intend to acheive by this ignoring of them? If the aim is purely to remove yourself from the situations you find yourself in when discussing with them, or because you find them a repellant human being and have no wish to associate with them, then there is no point in telling them this.
At best it will be ignored by them, at worst it will be seen as either a challenge (to them to get you to break your self imposed rule) OR it will be misinterpreted by them (and perhaps others) as an insult and an attempt to have a go at them, to belittle them.
The one thing it will not be seen as is what it is, which is you shutting the door on them.
Why do you wish them to know this? Because if your wish is that in someway it will bring home your feelings to them then it won't.

Ignoring people is not the answer on many levels.
1st it may work for you to an extent but some other reasonable newbie may ask why you are ignoring Count Vulpine if he/she is being reasonable at the time. Then you have to get dragged into telling the whole sory tale.
2nd Earl Cannine might shape up and then where are you? Do you say sorry and rebuild those bridges, possibly to be slapped in the face again?
3rd Duke Lon Channey might want to get peoples backs up and change their behaviour thus disrupting the way we used to enjoy things here.
Over the past few weeks what seems like a workable strategy has emerged.
Use the coplaints button for ANYTHING yikesable, the more they have on researchers the easier it is for TPTB to act.
Use a diversion rather than get involved, leave a link to your response to anything you dont like and post your response at another part of the site and carry on with the thread.
Or you can ignore them the same way some people just ignore tumours.
one love

I don't think Gnomon is talking about the person you are refering to Blicky.
If it is who I think it is they are far more toxic than that.

I am probably wrong, what's new there?
I wouldnt have described [name deleted] as poisonous, more annoying than anything.

It's certainly not Lord Wolfden I am talking about. I don't believe he is evil, although he is certainly very stupid.
The researcher I am talking about is an expert at distilling as much spite and invective into his/her postings as possible without actually breaking the house rules. So yikesing is not the answer.
OK.
Having listened to you all, I'm going to ignore them without telling them. Although they can obviously find out by reading this conversation.

If I were paranoid, I might assume it was me. But since I KNOW everyone is out to get me, ...
In the end, I guess everyone will have their own approach and methods, and reasons behind them.

To be honest Gnomon, I've found them to be pretty alright most of the time. And quite good fun some of the time. OK, I accept that on occasions they do go off on one in quite spectacular fashion, and that that ain't pretty.
