I was wondering about compliments versus other forms of affection. Personally I don't tend to randomly compliment people, not even Nice Friendly Girls. Partly I'm not that articulate, partly it just never occurs to me, and being complimented doesn't mean anything to me personally. Plus when I hear other people complimenting stuff, it always sounds really forced to me.

So, to the Nice Friendly Girls, do you expect to be showered in compliments by a (potential or not) partner?

It's one of those self referential loop thingies isn;t it? compliments are accepted and indeed welcomed if you are the sort of person the young lady in question wishes to receive compliments from. But the only way to find out is to compliment her, by which time it's too late anyway. And if you don;t you never find out. Damned if you do, damned if you don;t.

I've heard of the Pixies and indeed listened to them but couldn;t name anything by them. In the words of The Mary Whitehouse Show, "I am aware of them".

Moderation and timing are key, really, in my experience.

Banging on ad nauseam about how beautiful, talented, kind etc. she is will go down badly. It smacks of trying too hard and, as mentioned, feels forced.

More effective is a 'throwaway' comment, made in passing, perhaps (but not unthinkingly ). A quick 'You look lovely' as you meet is better than a 10 minute cringefest. Oh, and 'I like your shoes' always goes down well

Ideally, try and notice something that she's spent some time on - make-up, clothes, shoes, hairstyle/colour etc, and compliment that in particular, but not so much she rolls her eyes!

You can try, but I'd advise wearing at least a helemet and some groin protection for the attempt.
