Walk Anyone?

At the end of National Cycle to Work Week here in the UK, it set Grandad wondering, how many people actually live close enough to their place of work to walk to work? i.e. within 1/2 hours' walk.
Walk Anyone?
Lear (the Unready) Posted Jun 24, 2001
Nope. I'm about 1 hour's walk away - I know because I tried it (had to) during the recent spate of London Tube strikes. I wouldn't cycle either because the London roads are just too dangerous for a dopey character like me.
Which is a shame, because I enjoy cycling and I like walking even better - I do it all the time out of work hours. And, like everyone else, I hate using the Tube...

I know how you feel, I only live about 8 miles from work, but as I work in a rather unsalubrious area, it's not safe to walk or cycle.

I live only half a mile from work, and enjoy the walk every day. It's really peaceful to mosey across the bridge, look at the sun sparkling on the water, watch the fish, check out the sailboats. I don't envy all the people stuck in traffic, sealed off in their airconditioned cars at all.

You've been watching too many of those adverts for Milton Keynes.

I very occasionally walk to work but it is too far really to be practical (about 4 miles). I am very content to cycle.
Mother of God, you are very lucky.

I walk to work everyday. Actually I live where I work - I just have to walk to the front door and attach the open sign.

The walk is about 20 minutes, much of it through a rather nice park
In the 8 months I've been at my job I've driven only 800 miles or so, compared to the 84,000 miles in 4 years at my previous job
BTW anyone want to buy a used Peugeot?

If I am awake early enough (and on Fridays) I walk in along the beach. Most days I cycle though. That said, trhis week I am working in Croydon so this mornings commute involved a taxi, and airplane and a train...which puts me back to square one, really

I'm not really here Posted Jun 25, 2001
I live about 8 minutes walk from where I have to pick up my taxi. I try to be good and walk, the trouble is, I'm so knackered by the end of the day I can't be bothered to walk home if it's cold. I walk in the summer though.

Oh GW, I thought this was going to be an invitation to the Grand H2G2 Summer Ramble, and it turns out a thread about work. I'll put my boots away.
30 minutes it takes me to walk to work. Don't drive a car. Hate riding the bike through clouds of exhaust fumes. There isn't any useful public transport. Keep me fit though.

In Southern California, living near your work is almost unheard of. You're lucky if you live in the same city. I don't even live in the same county, and my commute is short by most standards. It takes me 15-20 minutes by freeway to drive to work, when the traffic is good (it usually is). By bike, it would take me at least an hour. By foot... this is summer, and it's desert. If I didn't pack enough water and sunscreen, I could possibly die enroute.

At least it's better than packing a sub-machine gun like I'd have to if I wanted to walk!
How many miles do you travel in that 15-20 mins Colonel Sellars, it takes me twice that long to travel 8 miles, even longer if I leave late & get caught in the rush hour traffic?

Blatherskite the Mugwump - Bandwidth Bandit Posted Jun 25, 2001
I work 12 miles away, but I drive in the opposite direction as the morning rush. But if I were to leave 15-30 minutes later, my drive time would go up by almost double.

i walk to school whenever possible, that is, when there is not a foot of snow and -30 degrees outside. since school opens at 6 and i like to get there about that time to do the homework that i didn't do the night before because that would've required lugging a history book for a mile both ways, i end up with a very quiet, pleasant walk there. when it's that early, there's almost no one else up, and it's like the world is standing still, frozen in time. it's a very good time to organize my thoughts.
