I am not now nor have I ever been a heavy metal fan per se.
That's because I'm old enough to have seen what happened when stadium performances in the late sixties grew so big and so loud that 'stadium rock' had to find new ways to 'include' such large audiences.
What evolved was a kind of 'folk rock' on big amps, a fusion that created simple, repetitive, feel-good themes loud enough to be shared by tens of thousands simultaneously. Ooops sorry - did you think heavy metal was something more complex? That's probably because these sing-songy pep-rally chants were spiced up with soaring and searing guitar solos (by the likes of Randy Rhodes) that are really 'blues/jazz' improv riffs.
As for 'entries', I'll be maintaining the conversation thread that's pushing for a new UK national anthem based on a traditional folk 'round' of We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions. No, I am not kidding and I believe it is important that the people of the British Isles recognise their own genius and celebrate it the way Freedy would have wanted you to. The way Freddy did!
