Madbeachcomber, I've done my spring cleaning, does that make me sad?

We use 'stewing', but it's sometimes delivered with the comment 'that'll take varnish off dining table' or 'you can stand the spoon up in that'' or 'the spoon melted when I stired it'but I guess that isn't helpfulsmiley - erm

I like my tea to be half a cup of milk, plus teabag, so I say this quite often.

Stewing

Turning it into "gutrot" or "gut varnish"

Brewing and mashing are simply words for making tea - in various dialects (Scottish and Yorkshire respectively, I think)

"You could tan leather with that!" or "That's strong enough to make my tongue curl at the edges."

But I'd agree with 'ruined'. I wouldn't go for 'half milk with a teabag', but I don't like strong tea. My favourite brand is Tesco's Finest Darjeeling. The great thing about it is you can leave it for ages without it getting too strong.

Brewing up to the point where it becomes unpleasant to drink when it becomes stewing.

"Ooh spiffing, the tea is brewing"

"Bleauch Stimpson, this tea is stewed!"

On other occasions the alternatives may be used as in:-

"Ay up our Gladys, is it time for a mash?"

And as it happens, I don't think that you could tan leather with tea, I think that you need dog poo for that.

You probably can't tan leather with tea, but the best leather is tanned with vegetable tannins, hence the comment. The very best leather is tanned with oak bark, although elm or exotic hardwoods can be used. Modern leather is often tanned with mineral salts. In fact, 'tannin' and 'tannic acid' come from 'tan - to convert raw hide to leather', rather than the other way round.

Not unless it contains mineral salts useful for tanning. I don't know what the dogs eat round your way, but the dog poo round our way definitely isn't suitable.
