A Conversation for The Campaign to Promote Respect for Microbes: An Awareness Program

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Post 241

Farlander

To all Campaign members,

I've added a News and Announcements Page (AA1928694), which may also be accessed from the main campaign page. It includes a mini newsletter highlighting the latest in microbes news (although there's currently very little news in it! a telltale sign that Farlander, despite being a geek, does not have very much time to surf). If you come across any news about microbes (good or bad) on the Internet or in the papers, please post to this conversation or start a new conversation thread at the news site, and I'll add it to the newsletter. Thanks, and happy reading.

Cheers,
Farlander.

They shall inherit the earth- hold on- they practically do already!

Post 244

SEF

They did inherit the earth! We are their many times descendants with some more of our little cousins tucked symbiotically inside our cells. smiley - biggrin

welcome to the campaign, leoalpha! here's your cup of yoghurt smiley - milk (think of it as a microbial welcome), hang on while i prepare the inoculation loop for your ceremonial branding/knighting -

- inoculation loop sizzles slightly on alpha's shoulders -

we're in the process of getting our own shiny official badge, although the one currently on the campaign page is yours for the taking, if you want! we now have a microscopic newsletter as well... the link is somewhere further up on this page.

cheers,
farlander.

ps: sef, you are so correct. if only people would listen when i tell them microbes were here before us, and will be here long after we're gone...

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side...

I still like the idea of mitochondria, and possibly other organelles having origionally been independant microbs taken into early eukaryotes, giving more microbial cells/origionlally microbial cells in a human body smiley - coolsmiley - boing

Post 247

Farlander

yep... i like the idea of being not one organism, but an entire ecosystem of co-dependent organisms...

have you read margulis? some of the later chapters are flawed, but the bits on the microbial theory of mitochondria are very nicely written.

Viojen 2*16+1+3+6=42. Fencing-it's escrime!

I would like to say that we just learned about that in bio, so I actually know what you're talking about! (this is definitely one of the best courses I've taken so far, comparable only with geometry)
And I agree, it's really cool. I've really enjoyed seeing how things are different because of evolution (ie in mitosis in prokaryotes, the nuclear membrane doesn't need to dissapate) although I must admit photosystems I and II are confusing. PS I came first evolutionarily, but PS II comes first in sequence if a plant does both. Oy. But the class is great.

And nice job on the announcements page, Farlander. A toast: smiley - milk

if the photosystems are confusing, wait til you get to biochemical pathways! our microbe physiology lecturer had this awful habit of flinging pathways at us every lecture, so that by exam time we had like over thirty of them to study... smiley - erm

i just got this book (well, actually i bought it about two months back, but i've only just begun reading it) on how microbes have driven evolution. i can't remember the exact title.... i'll go look it up in case you're interested. great book. ah, yes, 'microbial liaisons', that's it.

Yeah, we do a lot of microbe stuff in biology class, and I learned this:
1: If all other life went extinct, bacteria would continue as normal.

2: If bacteria went extinct, all life on earth would go extinct within 30 years.

Important stuff to realise. Though you could have learned that from watching StarTrek NG. smiley - biggrin

LOL, and life wouldn't really be worth living in those 30 years, would it? no cheese, no alcohol, no bread...

welcome to the campaign, hussassan! here's your complimentary cup of yoghurt smiley - milk, and thanks to lentilla, i can now proudly say - your shiny official badge awaits you at the main page!smiley - cheers
