Despite having worked in a microbiology research institute, alongside s researching anthrax, I only discovered this week (following the unfortunate death of a drummer from anthrax) that its etmology derives from the Greek 'anthrakites', meaning coal-like. This describes the coal-black crusty lesions which can form on the skin.
