Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

You may want to put a footnote in the Emo/Screamo bit to the effect that as a genre emo has existed since the early 1980s (when it was an offshoot of Washington DC hardcore scene), and though bands such as My Chemical Romance are labelled emo by the media many 'true' emo fans do not consider them such.

*On the spot comedy*

Q: What's the difference between a My Chemical Romance concert and 100 emo kids falling off a cliff?

A: Only the second one makes you laugh.

It'd be a terrible shame for you to lose your momentum on this, TLTS... keep plugging away and I'm sure it'll be ready for inclusion in the Edited Guide before too long!

Is this entry meant to be a definition of all forms of metal or just existing ones?

Ok I admit I'm biased, I love Maiden and Metallica etc but my late teens were in the nineties and were spent in clubs moshing to bands like Sepultura and Pantera - 'normal' thrash bands. However I remember the scene being dominated by the 'Alternative Metal' bands. These were playing metal but mixed with funk, punk, rap, industrial and many other genres. The bands listed here are just what you'd have expected to hear at any club or Ozzfest (I still remember the first one in the UK at the Milton Keynes bowl in 1998!smiley - cool) at the time;

Faith no More
Fear Factory
Coal Chamber
Rage Against The Machine
Rollins Band
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Korn
Therapy?
White Zombie
Wildhearts
Biohazard
Terrorvision smiley - laugh
Corrosion of Conformity
Nine in Nails
Marilyn Manson

For completness you should also mention grunge as it helped keep loud metalish smiley - biggrin music alive when lots of people listened to dance...it also introduced a lot of people to real metal! Bands like Nirvana, Peral Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains etc...

See this is the problem, the deeper in you get, the more and more you have to put in, but you have to realise to draw the line somewhere, otherwise the entry becomes impossible...

Some of the bands you mentioned are kind of covered - for example, Fear Factory, NIN are frequently cited as 'industrial'. Coal Chamber, RATM, Korn, Marylin Manson are (rightly or wrongly) sometimes lumped in with the Nu-metal movement, because of the audience they attract, rap metal influences etc.

I realise that trying to condense such as diverse range of music with so much history, so many 'rules', so many idiosyncracies and 'movements' and 'scenes', into about so many words is probably naive, adventurous or stupid.

I think we'll have to accept that, some things can't be pigeonholed, they borrow bits from here and there to create successful music that just falls under a broad spectrum of 'rock'.

Grunge...that probably won't make it in, it's more 'rock' than 'metal'.

Now I've said all that...

I'm still in the process of writing this entry, don't worry people, but it just so happens that I'm a very busy (lazy) man and I have got A-levels exams coming up, so, yeah...
