Hi, welcome to pr

While the entry is well reserched, there are a few points ...

firstly, have a look though the writing guidlines - A53209, you see that use of the 2st person - ie 'I belive' is fronded upon. Perhaps that intro could be reworded to explain briefly about heavey metal.

2ndly - with regard to links, 1) please mention what the page is you link to, rather than just click here, 2nd - only link to edited guide entries.

3rdly, content wise. I'm afraid, it is lacking. While the sub-genres covered are detailed, there are a lot that aren't. You mention NWOBM, but not go into details, likewise some of the older genres.

Also I've seen a similar entry come into PR and go out again without being picked, partly because the resercher was insiting on excluding certain sub-genres cause they didn't think they were metal. nu-metal & metalcore would be seen my many a layman as metal because they have the word metal in, and the artists performing it would call themselves metal. (or insist that they can't be pigeonholed)

These kinds of entries are very difficult to get right cause of the varing defintions people hold about metal, rock, blues, jazz or pop. Its just a warning.

also, though otheres may dissagree, I think that this entry is already covered by one of the edited entries you linked to. And we don't want 2 entries on the same subject. It will probably be better doing this as an update to the A1084745 entry.

What do other people think ??

smiley - ok That sounds sensible to me, Jon. As six of the sub-genres in this entry already exist in the EG, I don't see how this could stand alongside it.

I'd be alright with this being entered as an update so long as it rectifies the flaws in the last one.

I really don't think speed metal is a seperate genre from thrash though, never have I come across a distinction between the two. Even the edited entry didn't seem to make one.

see, thats the problem with these type of entries

It rather goes on personal opinion, ie some bands will claim to be speed metal, so who are we to say that they belong to a catoagory that doesn't exist ?

Fair enough, it just that I've never heard a band call themselves 'speed metal' and for speed metal to be a seperate genre from thrash.

I think most people regard thrash and speed metal as two names for the same thing.

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

Good entry... only skimmed it really, but I'll give it a closer look later.

One thing though in the grind section:
"the first of these being Napalm Death." - It might be worth putting in a footnote that Napalm Death themselves regard The Swans as the first grindcore band.

I've read in various publications that a lot of the bands who have been given the speed metal label do regard themselves as thrash.

Yeah it reads very well...I'd probably like to see it some other categories added.

What about the some of the cross overs between punk and metal. British bands like Therapy (I think) are definately metal even though they are heavily influenced by punk. Also what about the US skate punk stuff it could be called metal so you need to mention bands like NOFX and Pennywise and early Offspring.

I think you also need to include some of the rap-metal stuff from bands like Rage Against the Machine.

Finally a lot of people would argue that the whole grunge scene of the nineties was metal and as such you should be including bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam? They certainly appeared in Kerrang a lot at the time! smiley - biggrin

but I though the definition of a metal band was that they could feature on a Kerrand cover ? smiley - smiley

Kerrang! think Bon Jovi are metal... that's all you really need to know.

Gnomon - time to move on

It's already a good idea to search the Guide before you start writing an Entry for it. Unfortunately, a lot of your entry is already covered in the Guide in A1084745. Have a read of that and see what you think.

Are you repeating?
Is there stuff in yours which is not in that?
If you took all the duplicates out of yours, would there be enough to make an Entry in its own right?

Would you prefer to update the existing entry, adding your stuff to it?

I agree with the other reviewers that this would make a better update to a previous entry.

I haven't heard anyone mention "Love Metal," yet this is the genre that includes bands such as HIM and My Chemical Romance. (Ville Valo from HIM stated that his music was "love metal.") I think it deserves inclusion, especially if you're trying to be comprehensive rather than judgemental.

I'll stick to judgemental on the love metal (smiley - yuk) thing... smiley - tongueout

Can. Worms. Opened.

What have I done?

I think I've got some editing to do.

a) Emo, Metalcore and NWOAHM will get more comprehensive definitions included in the main body of the entry. If anyone wants to help on that - you're most welcome.
b) Honourable mentions will be given to NWOBHM (it no longer exists - well bands from that era still do, but the movement itself was confined to the 80s, anyway it's influence can still be heard in the 'Maiden-isms' adopted by many bands and it is what most people refer to when they say they listen to 'heavy metal', and the NWOBHM defines heavy metal for people outside of the scene), grunge (though I'm not sure about that one myself as grunge is more a sub-genre of rock, rather than metal) and Nu-Metal (le sigh).
c) Love Metal will NOT be included.
d) That footnote will be added about Napalm/Swans.
e) If anyone can come up with a tag for bands like Isis and The Ocean please let me know; so far 'Ambient' seems to be the applied tag - The Ocean describe themselves as 'Ambient Soundtrack Doomrock'

I'll try my best to sort it out when I have some free time and will post to let you guys know.

Keep subscribed!

Well, I sorted out the inro a bit, added Ambient to the entry and added the footnote about Napalm Death.

I'll do more when I feel like it, though I'm not particularly looking forward to what comes next...

Oh, and I don't care whether it gets put in as an update or an entry in it's own right, though I get the feeling an update is more appropriate despite my *ahem* 'issues' with the earlier entry.
