A Conversation for Genesis - the Band

It's way to intelligent, that's the reason that it's been ridiculed over the years. What you don't understand you fear.
BTW : that thingy about the unions : honest to BOB it's really true.

Incredible, they obviously need a Thatcher for the music industry to put things right, power to the people not the unions.

Grendel.
Please note Phil Collins, who not the original drummer, but THE drummer when the band became famous, was far from a pulic school boy. Unless of course when in the company of the other band members.
Was it Richard McPhail who was the original drummer?
How did you feel about the Marillion Genesis / Genesis Marillion comparisons back in '82 / '83. I didn't think that Marillion had plagurised Genesis in any way shape or form. I still remember seeing them do "Forgotten Sons" on T.O.G.W.T. IMHO Marillion lost the plot after Misplaced Childhood.

On their first album 'from genesis to Revelation' the dummer was John silver, on "Trespass", John Mayhew, and then Collins joined the for 'Nursery Crymes' and all later albums.
I could hear some similarities between Genesis and Marillion, but I always thought it was more of a sharing of style, not plagiarism.
And you could never get confused by the lyrics, they were poles apart.
Yes I agree, 'Misplaced Childhood", was my favourite, and they just did not seem able to follow it up, a shame, they seemed to have a lot of promise. I bought a 3 Cd set with Childhood, Script, and Fugazzi, I have only listened to Fugazzi once in 5 years.
The Lamb Lies down on Broadway, remains my favourite, closely followed by Foxtrot. Their later stuff bares no comparison.
Strangely though, although Gabriel leaving, changed them a bit, It was not until Steve Hackett left them after Wind and Wuthering, that Genesis did a 180, and started coming out with 'commercial' albums.

Obscure.
I first became aware of GENESIS when I heard Follow You Follow Me, and thought it was a great song. I suppose at somewhere near that time I would have heard Solesbury Hill as well, but would have been totally unaware of any connection. I worked for Falmer Jeans in a warehouse for a while, where some of the guys got me into Genesis amongst other bands. My first gig was a additional night put on at the Lyceum for all the fans who couldn't get tickets for Wembley (I think) in May 1980. The gig was on sight and sound in concert, so within a few nights I was reliving the whole thing at home. I have always been a big fan of live music, so my fave album is Seconds Out, which features a great rendition of one of my all time favourite songs - Dance On A Volcanoe.

genesis puts on a great live show. so does gabriel, pink floyd and yes. one of the best concerts i've ever seen, though, was supertramp. they had all kinds of stuff going on. good music too.@

Ahh... but of all the acts you mentioned only Genesis is still writing music as well as evolving... PG doesn't count because he is doing his own thing...I wouldn't call him Rock, I wouldn't want to insult anyone...

you're right, of course. genesis continues to evolve, weathering personnel changes that would have dissolved any other band. they continue to produce good music and put on entertaining live shows, as well. how do you feel about phil leaving and do you know anything about the new singer?@

I knew that the other two had enough talent to keep it going indefinitely. As for the singer his name is Ray Wilson and he used to be in a band called Stiltskin. Since he joined they're playing lots of old song again as well..Last year I saw them live and they played the unplugged version of 'Dancing out with the Moonlit knight'...with Tony, Michael, Ray, and the second guitarist all playing guitar and singing close harmony...
They don't forget the new stuff but Ray Wilson's voice sounds a lot like PG in Genesis...technically he actually sings better that PG did in those days. PG had to take a shower every fifteen minutes when they were recording the first LP because otherwise he'd lose his voice...(honest, they had a shower in the studio...).
Preferred songs from 'Calling all stations' :
- Calling all stations
- Smalltalk
- One man's fool
- Shipwrecked
- The Dividing Line
Buy it and enjoy !

Guys,
I heard a live gig sung by the new boy, I thought he sounded better than Gabriel did singing the intro to "Supper's Ready". It was a shame that they only did the first bit. (Is that Lover's Leap?) This isn't to say he IS better, I think recording techniques have come a long way, and so has PA equipment. These factors have to be taken into concideration.
Is Daryl Steurmer still playing with the band on the road? I don't think Chester Thompson is, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Of course I do. Genesis now officially consists of :
- Tony Banks
- Michael Rutherford
- Ray Wilson
On stage they are accompanied by :
- Nir Z (drums)
- Some young bloke on guitar/bass who's name I forget. He was the first hired hand I have ever heard in Genesis live who actually started the solo to Firth of Fifth, played the exact solo for about 2 minutes and then started to improvise on the original ! Bravo !!!
BTW : the official website is here : http://www.genesis-web.com/
It's been revamped recently so have a lot of fun !

Microsoftian Rhapsody.
Is this computer life?
Is this monopoly?
Caught in a landslide
No escape from our lawyer's fees
Open your eyes
Subpoena surprise I see
I'm just a tycoon, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go,
Hit 'em high, Hit 'em low,
Everything's on Windows, that's all that really matters to me,
To meeeeeeeeeee..
Mama, just killed a LAN,
Put a CD in its bed,
Loaded software, now it's dead,
Mama, my fun had just begun,
But now our government's thrown it all away
Mama ooo-ooo-ooooh
Didn't mean to monopolize
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, 'cause Windows really matters
Too late, my trial's come,
Sends shivers down my spine
Opened email hurts my mind,
Goodbye everybody-I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Mama ooo-ooo-oooh (everything's on Windows)
I don't want to cry ,
I sometimes wish I'd never met OS/2 at all
I see a little Linux shadow on the LAN,
Scaramouche, scaramouche will you program open source code
Java beans and lightning-very very frightening me
Linus Torvalds, (Linus Torvalds),
Linus Torvalds (Linus Torvalds)
Linus Torvalds figaro-Magnifico-o-o-oh
But I'm just a tycoon, nobody loves me
He's just a tycoon from the Windows family
Spare him his stock in this monopoly
Easy come easy go, will you let me go?
Bismillah! No-,we will not let you go-let him go!!!
Bismillah! We will not let you go-let him go!!!
Will not let you go-let me go!!!
Will not let you go-let me go!!!
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
Janet Reno Janet Reno, Janet Reno let me go
The Government has a remedy put aside for me,
for me, for meeeeeeee
So you think you can subpoena and split up my pie
So you think you can sue me and let Ballmer try
Oh Reno-Can't do this to me Reno
Just gotta resign-just gotta resign right outta here
Windows really matters,
Anyone can see,
Windows really matters, Windows really matters much to meeeeeeee
