The book works on a metaphoric level, as in trashing our past culture. Sam Pulsifer is a loser who accidentally burns down the Emily Dickinson home. [In reality, it is doing fine] Then a series of copycat crimes are committed, with Pulsifer taking the rap for those as well. Maybe we deify writers too much....
