Modifying public domain images (also CC)?

Hi,

I would like to know what is the stance on including parts of or whole public domain images in a submission.
When i mean public domain i mean images that have been released with no lisense deliberatly so they can be reused reworked or edited.
Also are there any "creative commons (CC) image lisenses that are compatible with h2g2?

Hi

If they are *really* public domain that should be fine. Some only are on the first look.
We are for instance using pictures made by NASA to illustrate Entries because they allow it.
Not exactly sure about CC. We for instance do not use pictures from wikipedia although they all should have a CC license, but we don't trust them.

Could you be a bit more specific? I'll try to get Happy Nerd into this thread because she usually knows about these things. smiley - run

I have talked to HN and she will contact NPL about it.

But please give us a bit more information about the specific problem. If you don't want to do it here on h2g2 for some reason you can email to artists at h2g2 dot com

Hi,

Yeah i thought PD would be fine, but wondered about other licences.

I wanted to do a graphic for an entry which i used two images that each can be used with permission from the authors.
One says as long as you give him credit (just his email address), and the other says without any permission as long as you
are using the image for anything that is either supportive of or gives a fair view of the product in question.

The images are:
1. The GNU head from the Free Software Foundation
http://www.gnu.org/graphics/agnuhead.html
2.(Tux) The penguin logo of the Linux kernel project.
http://www.isc.tamu.edu/~lewing/linux/index.html

I did submit a graphic, and Tavaron remarked they were commercial logos and could not be used. I have tried to do several other graphics - but i really feel that one or both of those graphics (even if they are my own interpretations) should be included.

The entry is "Linux (GNU/Linux)" A311130
