I am quite sur I put myself as a maybe - somewhere - it depends on how soon I'll be in shape for travelling.
Manchester is doable with only one change of flights, but I need to be able to get out of the Inner Lair more than à few hours before making any firm plans.

Hotel booked.
Train tickets have arrived and safely stowed. Now how many cameras do I bring?
And, Frenchie, Beatrice, you and I are sharing the same hotel?
That's great. 
And I'll pay for the cab back to the hotel on Saturday, to save hanging around for 
or as it's usually a late finish, from my experience.

The afternoon event is a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester's Battlefield, on the site of the worlds first inter city railway station.

It may be, if you are fully mobile, but after a day out, and an evening in the pub my legs may be too tired to walk there. Your 5 minutes is probably nearer 15 for me, so yes, a cab may be necessary...
