I extremely rarely air my woes on here - but I have been one to lend support to a lot of folks over my dozen years and some. Including some very dire circumstances. I've also sub-sub-edited about 20 or so entries, and a few photos attached to entries, which is somewhat rewarding too.

Sorry to hear you had those problems to deal with. I didn’t know what was going on, and I’m sure others didn’t either. Clearly you’ve done the right thing, and I hope the changes you’ve made bring the security the site needs.

You mentioned pre-moderation. I don’t doubt that you have reasons for it, but as a sanction extended pre-moderation is very disruptive to conversation at h2g2. When a moderatee responds it can take many hours or even days for their posting to appear, and by the time it does it’s out-of-date, irrelevant to the conversation around it, and often unnoticed anyway - as it’s far back in the thread. There must be other ways, and this is an example of something where the wider community may be able to suggest ideas and improvements.

This is a writing site first and foremost, and we have suffered far too long without any proper focus on getting people writing. This doesn’t mean constantly exhorting the few remaining h2g2 junkies to keep banging out enough material to keep the front page or h2g2 Post updated. You need a fresh look at the editorial function. You need to find out who can write what we need and how to contact them and support them. If the copy’s good enough, and relevant and up-to-date, then people will read it - it’ll be easy to promote. The site relaunch is looking like a bit of a pipe dream at the moment, but it may be possible to accelerate what we have and get some momentum going again if the right focus is given to it by you and your team.

Moderation is a back-office function. We should never know it’s there. When it becomes the subject of conversations it’s failing. We want to discuss Life, the Universe and Everything, and write about it with like-minded people.
