A Conversation for Talking Point: 11 September, 2001 - One Year On

A Year in Closing

I remember the day clearly. I had just walked onto school campus (I live in the west so school was just starting). People were everywhere talking about something. I heard the words terrorist whispered around but I figured it was some crazy guy at the community college again (I had walked right through the last crazy student shooting without noticing the police cars or the helicopters). Eventually, I bumped into one of my friends and asked about this terrorist thing. He told me everything. Both planes had crashed into the Twin Towers by now and we were talking about who could have done it. His last guess was Osama bin Laden and the Taliban.
My initial reaction to this news was more like annoyance than anything. I had visited the Twin Towers quite often when I lived on the east coast, and I found the place amazing. Now that it was gone, I'd never see it again. My world view throught this year though, has changed little. I understand that people died on that day, but I wasn't phased much. One thing that does bother me about 9/11 is that everyone is trying to forget the Twin Towers. Its like they simply don't exist anymore. Any movie that had the Twin Towers in them, had them edited out.
I think that the Twin Towers should be rebuilt. People can not conquer their fears until they come face to face with them and the success of a new Twin Towers will save the nation from its own fear.
I probably will not be marking 9/11. It is time to move on. It is time to show the world that we can get up after we're hit. And to rub it in the Taliban's faces, we will succeed and become more successful.
