Why the Pixies?
Fished Out Posted May 1, 2003
What's great about the Pixies? Hmm, they inspire you to want to start a band, that's defintly one thing. Ever notice how Smells like teen spirit could be a Pixies song? Even members of Nirvana later said it could (I think it's the way they use dynamics). They were crazy, and they make you want to be crazy, and they make me wish I was doing more than toddling around and playing in paddling pools in 1987-91! They might not be well known in "the mainstream" but I think they'll be remembered for a looong time (Placebo recently did an Xfm session including "Where is my mind").

I don't think I know any of their songs. I know the name though
Pixies
Number Six Posted May 2, 2003
When I heard it down the local indie disco the first few times, I thought Smells Like Teen Spirit WAS a Pixies song! This is why I never believed Nirvana were quite as good as everybody seemed to think... the old source music v period music argument again.
For the same reason, I got off on the wrong foot with Oasis because 'Cigarette and Alcohol' is actually 'Get it On' by T.Rex - and partly because of that, I didn't really really like anything they did after that, with the notable exception of 'She's Electric'.

Oasis are rip off merchants.

S'right! The other objection I have is that the majority of their fans that you meet as so feckin' pig ignorant. They played three nights of gigs just up the road from me in Finsbury Park, so I speak from bitter experience...

Radio
spocky Posted May 3, 2003
why not?
if you can find the right radio station that plays all your favourite music then why bother spending money buying the songs if you can just listen to them. Plus, if you have two or three favourite stations then if one plays a stupid song then you can flick to the others. And the hosts are most of the time funny.
Radio
Number Six Posted May 3, 2003
I must admit, I really like BBC 6Music... when I used to work shifts, I used to turn it on at about 10 in the morning and by the time I had to go to work at about 2 in the afternoon, they'd generally only played a couple of songs I didn't like.

I do, but I don't have a radio and can't get a decent signal where I live and I can't seem to get the radio to work on the computer.
