Pim Fortuyn's assassination shocked Dutch politics. The elections are yet to come, so new information may have to be added later.

Just thought I'd get here before the masses of M2M2 get here.

There is no mention of his homosexuality. He was a flambouyant charactor but he also one of the few leaders of any political party to be so openly gay. This is an important part of any biography about the man, especially as he did not attempt yo hide it in his own autobiography. I'm sure M2M2 will be linking to this article at some point as I understand they are looking into Lesbigay role models so surely some room can be made in this article to mention this fact.

There's a reference to his homosexuality in 'The Person'. Where it is said that he was openly gay. But indeed, it could be emphasised more. The main problem is that the outcome of the coming elections may well be very important to his biography. The elections are the 15 th of May.

Best advice then is either take it out of peer review until after the elections or be ready to add an extra note to the sub once you know what the result has been.

The comment about him being gay is not obvious as I was looing for it and missed it.

I would think that the results will be known before this gets to the editing section of h2g2 anway - so you could easily update it or contact the sub in question. smiley - smiley

As an aside Istari, you may be interested in the Dutch Researchers Club on h2g2 which can be found here: A614503. We try to get together a few times a year - a mini meet which boasts the attendance of an italic is scheduled for the end of this month, infact. smiley - ok

Thanks DD for picking that up.

Yeah I was looking at starting an M2M2 page recognising prominient homosexual especially if they have an entry on H2G2, so this is a good point to start with. smiley - smiley

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

Hi Istari,

This is an interesting entry and leaves me wanting more. I know little or nothing about Dutch politics.

Would it be possible to put a short summary of the status quo before he came into politics, for ignorant people like me?

Also, I'd like to know a bit more about the man. Why did he decide to enter politics? Had he any track record of political activity before deciding to form his own party? How did his views become formed?

I can understand the feeling of someone believing his country was full. Was he uniform in applying this, eg would he have wished to exclude Germans, French and Italians (or British, come to that) as well as refugees, Turks, Bosnians, Russians (I'm guessing here)?

Now I feel mean saying this, but there are lots of spelling mistakes and a couple of places where the Englis reads strangely. (Sorry!) When I've time, I'll happily go through the entry. smiley - smiley

I hear he is actually being buried in Italy, and he used to be an Altar boy in the Roman Catholic church. His first relationship apparently was with another altar boy

Hmm, very interesting. As someone who gained popularity so quickly and who didn't appear to fit with the sterotype of a right wing politician I would be very interested to learn more. Probably want to wait until the election is over though, until we see if his party lives on after him. Other than that, I agree with everything said above.

Is this an article particularly relating to the assassination? If purely a biography (and of course the end of his life must feature highly given its implications and effect) then it is missing a lot of background detail.

I was just thinking that as I was reading my paper for a Biog it needs a lot more about his outside life, like how he made his millions in business. I dind't realise that he also said just before the French Election that he would have voted for Chirac as he wasn't anti-foreigners just sais that Hollan was Full and had no room for any more 'guests' as he put it.

Reading the comments, it seems best to withdraw the entry from the Peer's review until the elections are over. In the mean time I can do some background reading on Pim Fortuyn, do some good spellchecking and rewrite some parts into better English.
If some other Dutch editors could lend a hand in the co-writing, it would be great! I will be withdrawing the entry to the writing workshop some time the next couple of days.
