What has worked out the best for our family reunions is that each person brings what his/her family likes to eat and h'ourderves or a dessert to share.

Note: PA potato and egg salads are unusually sweet because they contain pickle juice.

I make really really strong dill pickles..... they do like those nasty sweet pickles here, though... and not only that, they also actually add sugar itself to the dressings..... my mom is from Pa, and she uses her mother's potato salad recipe..... only she cuts down on the amount of sugar in the dressing... I cut it down even further becasue it's still way too sweet!

Irish Potato Candy:
The use of potatoes as a base for candy recipes dates back to pioneer days.

3 potatoes, each about the size of an egg
1 1/2 pounds of confectioners' sugar
12 ounces of chilled peanut butter

Mash the potatoes, add sugar, roll it out flat and spread the peanut butter over it. Roll it up longways, chill, and slice. Yeald: 60 pieces.

Just a suggestion from a local who already knows what she's bringing....

You'll all be going from the motel to the picnic pretty much together, right? It's a sure thing anything perishable won't keep in this heat if you bring it from home... Why not stop at a grocery store (I'd reccomend one of the larger Stauffers for the best quality on a Dontbry) on the way and decide what to get there - between you all, you should be able to figure out some deli meats, cheeses, breads (rolls or buns for sandwiches maybe?).... If you want me to bring condiments, let me know - I keep lots on hand and there's no sense in buying a bunch of that just for the picnic.

I'm sure you'll find some other things that look good at the grocery store too - potato salad, stuff like that.

As far as what else to do besides eat... well, a lot is going to depend on the weather - if this heat doesn't break before then, best not to try to do anything other than stay out of the sun as much as possible.
