I thought David Tennent nailed this outing perfectly, I thought it was a very good episode, I liked the humour and the Doctor's out and out weirdness, kinda reminds me of Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy. Nice of them to pay homage to Douglas Adams
I wish Tony Blair had Harriet Jones' balls
I'm looking forward to Torchwood now
As for searies 2, the Cat Nun's worry me, but can't wait for the Cybermen and Tony Head

Okay, I may be being dense here, but which ship crashing ten years ago gave us Torchwood? I'm guessing its a reference to an actual Dr Who event, not some arbitrary made up thing.
Kerr Avon said:
The ship that crashed years ago may have been an event we haven't seen yet: maybe we'll see it in the new series.
To which I responded:
So speaks a true sci-fi
It's difficult to follow a line of conversation when people are simposting, so, sorry If2871, my reply wasn't aimed at your Captain Jack comment.

Loved the HHGG references - the ship which hung in the sky in the way that bricks don't (though it did look like that BA add from years back which had Manhatten suspended over London); the cup of tea gag and of course the explicit acknowledgement of the Arthur Dent reference with the PJs and dressing gown.
Loved the repeated 'yes, we know who you are' gag.
Really didn't like the way Harriet killed the aliens at the end - it just seemed completely out of character for her to do so, and left a nasty taste in the mouth.
My jury is out on whether or not Tennant will be better than Ecclestone - Ecclestone was *so* good....
All in all, a well-scripted episode, but not one to remember for ever and always.

She pulled the old 'Belgrano Manoeuvre', also known as 'shooting someone in the back after they've given up'.
Having said that, in her position... no, actually, I wouldn't have done that.
She missed the point, and her excuses were just that.
Better, surely, to let the Sycorax go back and tell the rest of the universe "We went to Earth and all we got was our butts kicked!"

Traveller in Time a bit shocked
"The Doctor did decide over one mans life, did he ever do this before ?
This was an active decided action as he pushed the button retracting the platform leaving no support for the 'Sygorax leader'. "

It was more the fact that it was so out of character, or out of everything we have seen of her character so far, which upset me.
But RTD can really really write for television, can't he?

Kerr_Avon - hunting stray apostrophes and gutting poorly parsed sentences Posted Dec 27, 2005
I'm not sure it was totally out of character. Acting in the best interests of the people she's been elected to serve has always been her primary motivation, and if she thought that their destruction was in Earth's best interest, then she'd do it.
TiT, nah, no way is that the first time we've seen the Doctor do something like that.

I wouldn't say it was out of character either - after all, who was it who ordered the Doctor to deploy missiles in 'World War Three'? I think the point being made there was simply that she was doing the natural thing for a leader to do, but that the Doctor has a better understanding of the scale of it all, and was disappointed that she just played to type.
I did love the subtle details, such as the ticker running underneath the BBC News 24 broadcast at the beginning that revealled Harriet Jones had managed to push through her cottage hospitals programme (as mentioned in 'Aliens of London'). And unlike previous Doctors, trying on predecessors' costumes, we got a subtle scarf and a flash of his costume from Casanova.
I'm deliberately not watching it a second time just yet as I want to see how much I might forget when I watch it just before the next season. Instead, I'm continuing with my work through all the 1960s stories, on DVD, VHS, fan reconstruction or plain old CD.
You just know I'm not going to hold out though, doncha

The use of the satsuma to remove the platform under the sycorax leader was interesting. The Doctor has destroyed alien enemies before - Ice Warriors in 'The Seeds of Death', Cybermen in 'The Wheel in Space', the Myrkur in 'Warriors of the Deep' - but most of the time he prefers to leave them to destroy themselves. Here he marks himself out as someone who'll always offer others a chance, but 'no second chances' - which is what he does to Harriet too.

Does the big button he 'shouldn't' have pressed (but did, thus stopping the blood-control thingy) also count as a Hitchhiker reference?
I loved it

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am... Posted Dec 28, 2005
David Tennant is better than Christopher Eccleston. That's all I got to say about that.
The ship! The Christmas tree! The scarf in the dressing room! The thing I spotted which I shought was ripe for being the next Bad Wolf and I rather embarrassingly have forgotten!
Anthony Stewart-Head being evil! Sarah-Jane Smith! K9! And having seen them move a bit I'm starting to relent on my negativeness about the new Cybermen.
Heaven it was!

so the blue smoking jacket in the doctors dressing room wasn't a reference to john pertwee?
i'm sure i saw 1 or 2 items from previous dr's that looked familiar. i'll rewatch it later and see what i can pick out on the vid.
