nah, Piper isn't as annoying and can at least act emotions. Mind you her frequent last goodbye/comeback stories don't help her.

I can see how good Donna the character could be but Tate wasn't quite up to it.

Fires of Pompeii and the Library 2-parter for Donna's emotions, as well as just before she leaves the series. Piper was good with emotions but wasn't as funny as Tate, not even close. I recently watched the Unicorn and the Wasp again and Tate is just brilliant in it. Out of the 3 recent main companions CT (Donna) is my number 1, with BP (Rose) second and FA (Martha) third. I'd defend CT very hard against her critics because in my opinion she was fantastic, and her character was excellently timed to break up all of the companion fancying the Dr stuff that had gone on before. Not a 'mistake' in any sense of the word for me. Utterly brilliant.

Going back to Torchwood for a moment, does anybody know when the week-long special event thing is going to be? I gather that it's kind of approaching, and I'm sure I'll spot it in the schedules, but it would be nice to get some warning.

I thought Turn Left was the single best perfomance by any of the new companions: she was just awesome in it. Her holding hands with the Doctor as they make Vesuvius erupt was a good example of her range and decent acting skills.

I liked Billie/Rose, I thought she was good in the Satan Pit and in Girl in the Fireplace, but she didn't come close to the consistency Tate displayed.

Turn left was actually very good, I agree.
I guess her acting must be one of those marmite things though as I found her annoying and distracting in The Unicorn and the Wasp. I'll agree she was consistent, but I doubt we'll agree about what smiley - winkeye

And her in the final episode I thought was very weak. But then, assistant/companion arguments are all part of the Who fun smiley - smiley

Yes... and that's why I prefered Piper to Tate. Who can suffer when it tries to be self-consciously funnny.

And I thought Martha was great - a breath of fresh air after Rose, and independent (as all the main companions have been in the New Series) without being overbearing (like Tate).

Martha was indeed independent -- she chose to leave the Doctor, and Rose didn't. Donna wasn't given a choice.

RE the Torchwood mini series -- they're showing it on this side of the around the beginning of July on BBC America. All the more puzzling that they're finally getting around to the Xmas special over here.

I'm assumin g that Torchwood is a bit more popular in the states?
Only as far as I recall the mini series is going to air at the same time in the states as in blighty. Or if not exactly the same time certainly within a few days and that seems odd as there is usually at least 6 months between showing here and elsewhere.

I thought Season 3 wasn't airing until the Autumn? But the next Sarah Jane must be out soon?

COuldn't stand Tate or the Donna character. I stopped watching 'her' series for a lot of episodes. I decided to give the Wasps episode a try recently but turned off when the Dr started to do his 'Give Us a Clue' comedy skit when trying to put together the antidote to the poison he had drunk. It was painful and summed up everything bad about what RTD did with the show.

oh Horay!

tell you what have a go at JNT as well!

well RTD did do things with the show that many disliked - it would be naive to think everything he did was positive and universally liked.

He did do a lot of good stuff - such as getting it back ont he screen and keeping it there. But he wasn't (isn't) perfect and I don't think we should let our gratitude at the show being back and being a success cloud our eyes to the bits he got wrong. Otherwise how can the show improve?

There you go with the anti-RTD stuff retort...no-one allowed to criticise what he has done. He brought it back and has done a lot of good stuff with it but also done somethings that many people do not like.

One is allowed to voice these opinions and have personal opinions even if they don't match with other peoples.

I generally enjoyed the most of the episodes.

Haven't got particular opinion of JNT stuff...couldn't actually tell you which series etc he did.

Does anyone not think that RTD did get better towards the later series? One of the things he was criticised most for was the excessively soapy storylines, but that certainly became less of an issue with S4 than previous series.

He still has his blockbuster obsession, but at least in Journey's End he managed to pull it off quite well.I'd love to see a powerful, climactic, but not blockbuster-y season finale - something like the Satan Pit in S2 or Exit Wounds in Torchwood.

Midnight and Turn Left were two excellent episodes, probably the best non-Moffat eps, and both were written by RTD.

The other place has the 6th of July as the first night for Children of Earth. I'm quite excited about it.
