"I think this pretty much guarantees that the next Doctor is going to have to be older."
Well, yes, unless they get an 8 year old in I meant significantly older

How about a differnet kind of regen? To a woman, or the aforementioned Patick Joseph? That would be a different direction. (I have to say, it would be hard to get my head around a female doctor after all these years)

Yeah, so did I. I think after David Tennant and an even younger guy, they will want to break the trend.

Hang on ... are we already discussing who Matt Smith will one day regenerate into, before he's even played the part?

A woman Doctor would be too different I reckon, and would be just for the sake of having a woman to be different or politically correct or some silly reason like that. Even if the woman was good that would be her branding, the PC Doctor or feminist Doctor. Or worse, Nurse Who. Also I just don't want a female Doctor, out of personal opinion. You don't see many female Hamlets do you?

To enter the whole Woman Doctor/non-white Doctor argument, I keep thinking back to something Russell T Davies said when the series came back, is that (to paraphrase) "you don't mess around with the main structural parts of the show - otherwise you might as well make a new show". If you make the Doctor a woman I think that changes the dynamic too much and I'd be quite happy to see another show with a female Time Lord lead - but I think the decision they made back in 1963 to make the Doctor a man I think still means he should be a he. Of course you can do absolutely anything with Doctor Who... but that's the point isn't it, because there's a danger that you could go off the mainstream audience and off in to some other world. Personally I'd love to see a really psychedelic exploration of space and how the TARDIS really links in with everything... and so on, but it's unlikely to translate well in 45 minutes of television.
Now I think a so called ethnic Doctor is slightly different... and I could see an actor of non-white skin being the Doctor, but again it has to be for the right reasons and because he's the right person for the job, not just doing it to (as Pier Wengers said this week) "earn all kinds of Brownie points" and headlines. Though they may come anyway.
I'm glad in a way that they've chosen someone who I consider... typically Doctorish, because it feels kind of right... I can't really explain it better than that. I predict that he will be an excellent Doctor, take the show to new heights, and you can all bow before me and give me lots of money when I'm proved right

gotta say, the more I look at him, Matt Smith might make a great Dr. Who.
Still awaiting the showing of the Xmas special in the Statez...we usually get it much later, like May or so.

As soon as they started talking about him being the youngest ever I was worried it was going to be Russel bleeding Tovey, who I don't get, at all! So, that was positive.
Definately got that 'other' look about him. Just makes me feel VERY old.

We've had a Doctor from 'the North' so maybe it is now time for a banjo playing Doctor?.

That daughter was a big casting error. I know it was Moffat who wanted to keep her alive, but I really hope he doesn´t bring her back now he´s in charge.

I don't agree. I think Georgia Moffett played the part very well, having the right mixture of naivety and excitement at having all these new things to discover.
I know other people have complained about her, but actually I think she was very good in the role and look forward to seeing the Doctor's Daughter returning to see how they've developed the character through whatever adventures she has experienced.
