Sorry, not buying any of the hype they are giving him. He's a jobber at best. I reckon they have mucked it up, but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

Well he's been in Ruby in the Smoke and Secret Diary of a Call Girl so they're kinda keeping it in the family.
He's someone I don't have an opinion on either way so my mind'll be pretty open.

Never seen him act, but the look could be interesting... quite gothic.

I just saw the end shot of the show and thought 'at least they'll be able to market a Doctor Who cabbage patch doll.'

I'm kinda looking forward to seeing him as The Doctor.
Be fair, they've never cast really well known actors as the Doctor, apart from Peter Davidson and Chris Ecclestone, give him a chance, I remember a lot of people saying "David Tennant?? I don't think he'll make a good Doctor" (I was one of them) but he's unanimously thought of as the best so far.

Matt Smith looks older than he is which is a good thing I would say. I haven't seem him act in anything but the clips I saw are things I would not choose to watch however from those clips he seems to have played diverse characters in diverse shows...again good.
His demeanour in Confidential was assured, pleasant and mature. Lets hope Moffat does what he says and has the Dr 'act' older than he his physical body looks...he is a few centuries old after all.
So, now it's down to Mr Moffat to mould the persona.
I notice on Digital Spy(no advertising!) that peopel are saying RIP Dr Who etc due to this actor. I'm willing to trust Moffat.

Very interesting... of course no one knows what he'll be like till 2010! Which is a scary thought! And I also know for a fact Doctor Who fans love to moan so I'm going ignore anything that is said over the next 12 months but agree with Whisky, quite gothic... could be a similar style Doctor to the one we saw in the webcast 5 years ago that Richard E. Grant voiced... interesting...

Also I suggest anyone who says RIP Doctor Who deserves a very severe mocking... not cruely but for their own health, as a sense of perspective is vital in these cruel and cynical times

It seems to me that on Digital Spy people are talking more about his looks and age rather than his acting abilities, I'm assuming these are the people that just tune in to drool over David Tennant or have only ever see him as the Doctor. I'd rather wait until I see him as the Doctor before I comment on how bad he's going to be in the role

Yes, the direction they choose to take him will certainly be what defines him in the role. I shall keep an open mind about it but right now can't help comparing him to the Troy McClure character in the Simpsons - 'Hi, I'm Matt Smith, you may remember me from roles like Curious Observer from the movie Gotham II'
On the looks thing, they could do an interesting running gag though, with him asking girls if they want to be his companion in the Tardis and all of them saying 'no, sorry'... or is that being cruel?

I'm sure Steven Moffat will be the first to make jokes about any obvious physical appearances - certainly based on The Empty Child where he pointed out Eccleston's ears and Nose!

If the official pictures of him are correct they have gone for a simple black T-shirt and jacket affair for the costume.
Someone on another Dr Who forum thinks there's a hint of Bill Nighy there in the looks which can't be a bad thing.
I think the age (too young!!!) and looks (Ug, ugly!!!) and the fact that it isn't David Tennant(kids...get over it, really, newsflash this is Dr Who number 11!!!) are from people who just latch onto the last thing they have got to know...the blip-vert, 10 second memory generation.
Personally, I thought: too young, then I saw him and thought, hmm looks older and nicely strange.

It was a very enjoyable programme, particularly the old flashbacks The moment I saw Matt Smith I thought...who? and then my next thought was "he looks strange...definitely has an alien look about him". I haven't seen any of his other shows so I'm open-minded.
I wasn't thinking Bill Nighy at all, he reminded me of...a boxer. And his hands were like those of the alien who was in Close Encounters, long fingers and knobbly knuckles.

I don't think he's ugly at all, although I think he would look better with less floppy hair.
I am a little concerned that he's a bit young but they said he can act older so I'll wait and see. Tough job for him, to be sure, to step into the shoes of DT.
