The new site is alive and kicking, but it could be a nervous reaction to being starved of h2g2.

If you need to go into restricted use mode again with the new site, a notification on the homepage might save a lot of confusion.

I'd like to ask the Eds:

Is there likely to be any scope for users to customise the site in terms of how it looks for them, personally?

I've explored the new site a little more, and I find that smileys are okay in all the conversations. The exception is the "about me" section of my personal space. only two options are given for that area: plain text and Guide ML. Plain text doesn't support smileys, and I never set my stuff up for Guide ML.

Something I would like to see, a mechanism for dealing with a broken link independent of the 'Yikes!' button.

Broken links are a common occurrence and can seriously mar an otherwise flawless presentation.

The heck of it is it's often difficult to be sure just where the broken link originates, whether at one's own computer, the website the link originates with or with h2g2.

If I cannot use < > and I don't use Guide ML, how do I get my smileys?

In my journal entries I have goner to using {smiley} rather than <
it doesn't convert to a picture but at least the meaning is clear.

The smiley bug has been reported. Given that they've even put the smilies in the text box now they're certainly not intending to stop us using them in the long term.

I'm just sticking to the old version for now while the true trailblazers are out bug-hunting.

Another problem with "Broken Links" is that they're not always actually "broken".

For a while, a few years back, the BBC were using their own corporate DNS server, and somehow it hadn't registered a valid DNS lookup for one of the larger free hosts (Geocities or Angelfire, I can't remember which) the upshot of which was that if a Mod looked at a link to there they would see it as "broken" even if everybody else on the web could follow it, and they would mark it as such.

The BBC seem to have got their act together now, but people using smaller DNS services such as those provided by local ISPs will sometimes (due to over-enthusiastic cacheing) see a site as "broken" when all that has happened is that it has legitimately moved its IP address. As long as they are on that DNS server, no amount of refreshing or reloading will make the site visible until the DNS cache is cleared and refreshed, which with some small ISPs has been known to take days. smiley - geek

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side...

Getting too many errors on the guide MK2, 500 internal server errors, and refresh just tells me I've posted somethign offensive... so there seems little point in trying it out for now as I can't post anything from within Guide MK2... smiley - erm

Reckon you're right 2legs any attempt to use the New h2g2 is totally frustrating, but it needs a specific area for feedback. At the moment problems are popping up all over the place.

I've just taken a look at your test Entry and tried it myself. It does appear as if the BR tags are visible in preview, (when I tested it out) but not in the saved version.

You might want to report this as a bug on the appropriate Feedback page.

The smilies are not functional at all - and the server is having a few hissy fits right now as well. But I seem to be managing to post mostly without problems if I give up my smiley addiction.

The Eds in their Opening Post in this thread told us where to report any bugs.

Here it is again A78067353

Make a new conversation and report the BR tag thing there. If you look down the Feedback page you will see all the other bug reports already made, so you don't need to report ones that have already been spotted as I presume the techies are busy ironing them out. Or fly swatting or whatever they do.

LB - I have posted the faults in the the New H2G2 Feedback page on the New H2G2.
This reply is being made in the new system.
Normally I would have used apostrophies to highlight the heading.
Lets see what happens 'New H2G2 Feedback'

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side...

I am back in the guide MK2, desperately attempting to restrict, neigh prevent my using smileys at all, which is harder than it would at first thought seem.
I have successfuly I believe, managed to add via preferences a suffix to my name, which as yet I do not see appearing after my name on conversation threads, only on my personal space.
I have added to conversations on guide MK2 feedback page where I ahve been able to reiterate those bugs, errors, or quizzible design features reported thus farly by others.
I think there is a strange think to do with some links displayed on my personal space, with A numbers, and U numbers, previously displayed with either article name or user name in the body of my personal space, appearing as just the number of the A or U itself. (so desperatly want to insert an e r m smiley here it hurts).
Also, but not quite sure as yet, the friends list on the personal space seems to be defaulting back to shoing U numbers instead of user names.
Not using the apostrophy is very niggly too, especially as the apostrophy is the crux of the biscuit.
(imagine if you will a whole series of smileys forming a closing section to this message).

Hi folks!

I've been pretty busy this week so I'm not too sure what's happening. Am I right in saying that the new hootoo was launched and then went down due to technical problems?

Also, where is it now? I'm getting old hootoo.
