But surely everything is being transferred over to Noohootoo so there won't be any significant loss of data.

Unless anybody knows any different, surely they're only rewriting the interface - both sites use the same database?

Ancient Brit Posted Jan 19, 2011
When the DNA Hub was initiated the original introduction promised that all sites using the the DNA system would carry the message 'Powered by DNA, the BBC's community website engine'. The message boards and other sites that have been and gone were moved over to the DNA system. The system is still a part of the BBC community website activities. Why oh why is it necessary to reinvent the wheel when all this is necessary is a new set of tyres.

This is just a new set of tyres. A new skin so that h2g2 looks like all the other BBC pages.

Actually yep...I'd forgotten. But yeah so true.

It's a bit more than a new skin, but it's not a complete reinvention either.
(I'm still waiting for an XML interface or some other form of API.)

Someone tell BMT he's a very naughty boy, he shouldn't be running about like that, and I'm sure handfulls of sweeties are not good for him!
Oh, and respect to The Eds - we have faith! Even if lil *will* break it within 2 days... that's if Prof's PS doesn't crash it first!

It's like when we're all used to the old h2g2 TV series and someone makes a film about it...
Well, not exactly

Lookalikes ?
BBC - http://www.bbc.co.uk/
h2g2 - http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/
!Ouch - http://www.bbc.co.uk/ouch/
Other sites can be checked in the 'Around the BBC Panel' at the right hand side of the Message Board Site here :- http://www.bbc.co.uk/messageboards/
As a user not a techy I assume that all these sites are 'Powered by DNA the BBC's Community Web Site Engine'. Do you think the new h2g2 site compares favorably in terms of visual appeal and functionality. Just as h2g2 needs a page within BBC there are areas of h2g2 that ,IMHO, need a specific front page. For Example 'The Post' and our own spaces. It is the creation of our own pages where problems will arise.
We need to have faith in our Ed's but they need our sensible comment.
It also needs to be recognised that just like the 'old Ford' has moved forward, development and evolution is ongoing. Even at 83 years of age you need flexibility, even if it means hip and knee replacements. This applies to any job or activity that is worth doing.

There are BBC sites that could be integrated eg Memoryshare could quite easily be part of h2g2. It took about 10 mins to transfer the first edition of my space into 'Memoryshare' (Please note this is a 'dna' site :- http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/memoryshare/home.
The result is here. :- http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/memoryshare/A77128860?s_fromSearch=ArticleSearch%3Fcontenttype%3D-1%26phrase%3D_memory%26show%3D8%26phrase%3Dh2g2%26s_from%3Ddrill_down
This highlights the point that DNA sites/communities could all be collected under one banner. At the moment posts to any DNA site are recorded and collected.

Nah... it's too late. I'm panicking because it sure appears that they're doing away with the stand-alone "My Conversations" pane. For those of us that use it, it is invaluable. The conversations list on the new H2G2 is just an adaptation of the list that shows up on user spaces and is missing too much functionality. Specifically, without it auto-refreshing and having links directly to the first UNREAD post rather than just the latest post in a thread, and having it control a distinct conversation window/tab, it just doesn't keep me as connected and it makes navigation unnecessarily tedious. To me, the rest of the changes I've noticed seem mostly cosmetic in comparison.

No panic 2legs, we've never really met although we joined about the same time. I suspect that your space will suffer a bit in the switch. Don't suppose it will cause too much havoc if to have a look:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/user/U169793
Prefer it under the old system but I guess it can be doctored.

I agree with you, Ancient Brit. I've always thought that the articles in BBC News Magazine would sit very well with h2g2.
I wrote to the BBC once to suggest it, but got no reply.

Many of the Blogs ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/ ) could have been set up in h2g2.
