"I don't understand Peet's problem with articles potentially causing a problem because of syndication."
A couple of years ago an New Zealand academic based his PhD research on my Heidegger article, A656787, (with no attribution of course), and had the cheek to announce it on the Net after discussing it with me here..It is an issue.
Beware of publishing cherished or potentially copyright ideas.

Jabberwock, I understand syndication to be other sites displaying h2g2's content 'as is' - ie with backlinks and clearly attributed and sourced. I think you're talking about plagiarism, which is something entirely different.

Yes, you're right of course, Rich, and thanks for correcting my carelessness.I posted in haste, without reading the thread properly.
My warning about plagiarism still stands, of course. We are extra-vulnerable across this site because you don't have to join to read/copy the articles and conversations.
It's especially important regarding personal details.

It is entirely up to examiners to detect plagiarism, which is easily done. There are programs available for the purpose, if they aren't up to googling for themselves.

>>First Post. Hope it all goes well and I can find my way about before then.>>
And a big welcome to you Sassernach. We hope you like it here.
On the question of keeping the conservation thread open - we're starting to do this more on announcements, hopefully in the spirit of allowing people to have their say for however long they have something to say (within reason )

In the matter of plagiarism
I note the terms and conditions include "Copyright in your contribution will remain with you and this permission is not exclusive, so you can continue to use the material in any way including allowing others to use it."
I have noticed however that the BBC has stopped putting the copyright sign on the individual pages.

I just had a quick look-around, and every page has "© BBC MMII" at the bottom. I guess it depends on the skin you're in...

You also don't need to have the sign there - it's not like it's free game without it!

Really? Even though it is MMX now? Just exactly what is under copyright?

"On the question of keeping the conservation thread open - we're starting to do this more on announcements"
You mean 'restarting' as they were always kept open, it was only for a short while that they were closed, then a thread had to start on Ask h2g2 to discuss it! More sensible this way.
