I thought the announcement had to be filed at the back of a file cabinet in a locked room in the basement, just as in the original Hitchhiker's Guide...

Can it be assumed that what you are "now in the process of doing is taking the experience of the last two years and radically redesigning the underlying architecture of the Guide so that it becomes much easier to find information, much, much easier to enter information, and much, much, much easier to connect one piece of information with another."

I've just had a sneeky peek and (shock horror!) I really can find where things are

Hi Ancient Brit,
I think with our chaotic approach it's safer to assume nothing.
We've wanted to sort out the categorisation system for *years* (certainly it had always been the plan of the old team to do so) but we decided to make a go of it and just before Christmas we conducted a little research with some people who were not familiar with the site. We haven't responded to all of their comments (we thought that it still made sense to keep 'Travel' in 'Universe', for example), and Paully suggested 'Deep Thought' as a subtle Hitchhikerism that isn't too alienating to people who are not fans of Douglas.
This is merely part of a few on-going ideas we have. The h2g2 team has always aimed to keep the Guide as an evolving project, and we have a few other plans up our sleeves, so stay tuned...

I'm not really here Posted Feb 1, 2005
I had a quick browse around it yesterday, and I think it looks great. Very clear on where to find things - if a little more 'normal' than the Guide is normally.

You can call me TC Posted Feb 1, 2005
It has never occurred to me to look for things, so I am totally confused now - about two things actually:
1. I thought this WAS the announcements page (Jimi X's post above)
2. Where do you start "looking"? (I just "search" in the bar at the top of the page.) I mean: where will I find this change?
To answer my own question: Presumably by clicking on "Everything" - but as I've never done that, I won't notice any difference, so I'll get me coat.
Have I missed anything important by not clicking on "Everything" during the last five years? I'll never find out.

"The firts type of catalog could be compared with < <./>RandomEditedEntry</.> > Where we now can use < C889 >
The firs tone bringing you in one go to great entry, very infomative well written. And the second one leading you in just a few selections to the entry you read once when it was still in review. "

Hi Trillian's Child,
I added the announcement to the Announcements Page after Jimi prompted me.
And the new categorisation is on the Front Page now.

Jimster - I can fairly assume that it is all part of the "evolution" and that when you've got a fair understanding of what you are doing you will start again.

"So far I have not missed any entry !
Using the formula as I have given before, I can find any entry back I have read before, so far.
Current state rmearks:
Can the Sub-indexes become more visible beside bold? Either give them another kind of dot, or place them on top or something.
The numbering for the main chapters is fine, just sometimes a bit odd above the entry . (here we go again: a b c d ? I II III IV ?)"

One click and a permanent link are most definitely appreciated.
Waz, can you point this event out to the Miners? I can't get to the Pig and Slag during the week.
Jimster. We you! (Course we do!)

RFJS__ - trying to write an unreadable book, finding proofreading tricky Posted Feb 3, 2005
Maybe I ought to take this to Feedback, but since it may be connected to the new categorisation system I thought I'd post here first. I just tried the Underguide link on the front page, and I got... C12233 .
Brafferton?

Turns out it should be C1233.

Number Six Posted Feb 4, 2005
I've just been rummaging around in a few of the new geographical indices (starting because I was curious about what or where 'Brafferton' was, mentioned by RFJS above) and there are lots of pages linked to on the 'iCan' site.
On page C12229 ('Darlington'), the first link is to a posting someone has made on the iCan site.
I'm not sure h2g2 index pages really ought to be linking to that kind of thing - is it intentional?

Number Six Posted Feb 4, 2005
I think I see now. That index page mentioned above must have been on the iCan site - I've just gone into the 'England' classifications from the h2g2 front page and they're all as normal.
Was it possible that I was just viewing an iCan page through an h2g2 skin?
