The H2G2 Editors Posted May 21, 2004
The release of DNA v2.20 to the live server will now be delayed. Rather than happening at 10am on Monday 24 May, it will happen at on the morning of Wednesday 26 May (exact time to be confirmed).

Well, I don't mind people silently reading what I have to say, but just subscribing to everything I have to say for the sake of having a quick link to it so they can post to every single post I make (for instance: Posting friendly messages on EVERY Journal Entry when I have no friendship with that person)
But I don't see the Friends list as a tool for bookmarking people you want to read. I see it as a tool to interconnect people together so they can communicate easier, having easy access to each other's posts. That's why it's called a *Friends* list. Not a Bookmark tool.
It's an all-out abuse of the tool, otherwise. Nothing else. Plain. Abuse. Another alternative is to have to allow people to add you to their Friends list - Random stalkers wouldn't be able to add you, but people you at least know and trust would be fine.
Whatever gets done about this though, *something* is in the Works. As Jimster said. It's on the list, whatever the *it* is - be it the simple self-removal tool, or something else.
If the former is true though, might I suggest a.. suggestion?
If you remove yourself from someone's list, they should not be able to just go ahead and add you again. An extra feature to it (maybe put back for another upgrade, for another time) could be to have to allow the other Researcher to add you after being 'knocked back' once before.
It shouldn't be a measure people have to resort to - but some people just don't listen at all.

And I can also confirm that we will be neither repopulating nor culling the smiley list for the foreseeable future, partly because the Community Artists are so busy right now, partly because we want to focus on small-but-important fixes such as the ones coming next week and partly because we don't want a turnip smiley

Re: Post 19, a suggestion...
Split the display into two logical groups, "Friends" and "Bookmarks".
A "Bookmark" automatically becomes a "Friend" if and only if the target has a reciprocal link back to you. It doesn't stop people following you around, but it stops them from implying that you are in any way "close"...

Who asked for a turnip smiley?
I have a few people on my friends list I don't know, but it doesn't really bother me to be honest. With h2g2 being the kind of site it is, stalkers just wouldn't have a chance. And how would you feel if you added someone to your Friends list and they deleted you?

Does that mean there's no forseeable smiley?
God bless the CAs. They really are the most talented people on h2g2.

It might be worth suggesting people take the discussion about the Friends List over to the Feature Suggestions page discussion - F47999?thread=338412 - where people have been discussing this for some time. Otherwise it might confuse some Researchers who might then expect this feature to turn up next week, when it won't. Also helps us keep all the ideas on this in one place.

That's actually not a bad idea. I mentioned the Friends list not being a Bookmark tool, but having such a tool aswell as a Friends list isn't such a bad idea (especially if the two converge to save pagespace too) . If somebody deleted me from their Friends list, I'd count it as a mistake, as long as we actually *were* Friends. I'd just ask them about it and see what, if anything, was wrong.
Do you know any *Friends* who would delete you from their Friends list? I mean, without a reason such as: 'I don't like the Friends list, so I'm deleting everybody and never using it' for instance.

Talented, too:
"Eurasian badgers are known to "scent" trees and fence post from 12 to 16 inches (30.5 to 40.6 cm) up the wood by doing hand stands. Then they rub the scent glands in their anus against the tree or post."
Can we have a smiley of that?
