21 May 2004: DNA 2.20 Upgrade Scheduled for 24 May 2004
The H2G2 Editors Started conversation May 21, 2004
The DNA 2.20 upgrade has been scheduled for 10:00am on Monday 24 May.
All DNA sites will be unavailable during this upgrade, which might take up to an hour or more, but could possibly be completed much more quickly (the last such upgrade was completed in less than 30 minutes).
The upgrade includes:
- When a user creates a new Entry they are now automatically subscribed to it.
- A couple of fixes to the new users page:
A check box to limit search to users who have updated their Personal Space
'Search users by site' check box now checked by default
(The upgrade also includes a few back-end modifications, like improvements to the back-end of the categorisation system.)

We've just added a quick summary of the changes to the first posting.

There are some backend changes as well, but they wouldn't make a lot of sense if we did relate them to you.
For instance, "legacy section removed from moderation interface". Nice for us, but...

We're hoping this will be the first of more regular, smaller, upgrades, rather than saving them up to do all at once. No promises though

Doesn't 'more regular, smaller upgrades' equal 'more downtime'?

And will all the fiddly features like the ability to delete yourself from someone else's Friends list be included in this upgrade?
I don't mean to sound anti-social, it's just there are a few 'sticky' Researchers around I'd rather not have following me.

That isn't in the current upgrade, but something similar to that is something very high on our list, which we've been investigating. Again, until a feature is confirmed we can't really say any more about it, but just to reassure you, this hasn't been forgotten

Thanks, Jimster! That first feature, automatic subscription to any guide entries we create, will be really useful! Does it work if someone else adds me as an author to their entry?

I actually propose a smiley cull of the ones that no-one uses much.

You can't do that!
Personally I hardly ever (almost never!) use , but some people use it as a line rule to separate sub-topics in their posts.
I do miss smileys not looking like the rest though. The Community drawn ones are good, but they just aren't the same as the in-house Team's ones. <-- Example

"will all the fiddly features like the ability to delete yourself from someone else's Friends list be included in this upgrade?"
Has that been agreed? There was a discussion about this a while ago and it was controversial whether this was a good idea. I made the point that people should be free to subscribe to and read whatever (public) forums/journals they like. Malicious 'stalking' should be dealt with seperately. I don't think it would be effective in stopping determined people from following you around anyway.
It seems to me that such a tool goes against the ethos of the site, and the internet in general. You can't stop people linking to your website (http://www.dontlink.com/). If you publish an RSS feed of your blog, you can't stop people from subscribing to it. Ideas like http://gmpg.org/xfn/ make the point that you can consider someone to be a friend, even though they might not think the same of you.
