"The advance notice gives only one days notice. This does not suggest anything planned well in advance. Is it a panic reaction to recent failures?"

No, in fact this is completely unrelated to the recent problems. What's actually happening is that changes are being made to the network setup between all the DNA servers which came to light last week when I was looking at something else. It's just configuration changes to network cards, and so it should really only take a few minutes (basically the time it takes to reboot the system). It's short notice because for a change of this type, there's no real reason to wait for ages before doing it.

The problems over the weekend are being investigated separately.

O.H., it is probably because "a few minutes" is an optimistic estimate. Scheduling the start at the beginning of a UK working day not only avoids overtime and the difficulty of finding out-of-hours staff but also allows the rest of the day for when it all goes horribly wrong...

Also Ran1-hope springs eternal

Dear Jim,

thank you for giving us advance notice. Could you tell me if each of us will be affected individually again? I was off line for about ten days the first time, and for well over two weeks the second time.
I know it is third time lucky, but I do not know if I will have a kind Samaritan to put me on line again. I do find the site so interesting, and deeply regret all the problems you have with it.
When I see the way I am welcomed at Amazon books, etc. and the way that they have a record of all the books that I look at and sometimes order, I wonder why it is that we cannot have a site like that.
I might add that my other site the EWTN one from Rome also appears to have problems. Perhaps it is gremlins that get into specific sites?

Wishing you well in your labours.

Kind regards.

Also Ran smiley - schooloffish

On a slightly different topic (or chocolate bar of your choice), does anyone know what's causing the problem with negative posts?
