Well, that centiment is certainly one that I believe many hear will agree with whole-heartidly.
For, is it not the case that we need to both protect ourself from teh result of any actions taken as a consequence of the current situeation, and, that, in a manner, H2G2, acts as such protection for many of the members of the community.
And, is it not also that the case, that we, the community, within the buggy, are, moving foward, and also that as a community we need to move foward, to remain alive. Therefore, the protection we require in order to continue as a vibrant and growing and developing community, is the knowledge of the results of this curent review of the BBCI web services, including H2G2.
Is that what you ment? smiley - ermsmiley - weirdsmiley - zoom

>> ..people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1983. They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era..<<

Thanks for all that. Most enlightening. Such a complete list of what I personally recollect as relatively current events. Quite rightly you point out they are all 'unknown quantities' to generation x.1

It is certain these young folks today hath no Saturday Night Fever and it makes me realise just how pointless it is for me to babble on about Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan or The Fugs. Hendrix, Joplin, the Doors, or that band Sir Paul was in before Wings.

Thank heaven for the Rolling Stones and Cher, who soldier on to bring some continuity that might bridge that gap betwixt the young and the not so young.

You can call me TC

That list of things kids today don't know about has been around a while - my second son was born in 1983 and it came out when school finished last summer or the year before. Lots of it is exaggerated.

We certainly still have metal caps on beer and soft drink bottles. Mr born-in-1983 opens his metal-topped beer bottles with his teeth as a party trick. And Mr born-in-1982, his older brother, has decided to only buy vinyl records from now on in because they sound better than CDs. He has a record player in his room.

Both of them wore terry nappies because the early 80s when they were tiny were the eco-boom years.

Above mentioned Dental Bottle Opener has mastered quite a Kansas repertoire on his violin and when he finds someone else to do the twiddly guitar accompaniments I look forward to a recital.

I have no idea what or who Tianaman Square, Jordache jeans, Larry Bird, Pac Man or Pong are or who said "Where's the beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel," or "DE plane, DE plane!". Must have been before my time, too.

And I challenge the expression *meaningful* when applied to the Reagan era.

Anyway, I'm so pleased the conversation has got back to the original topic again so I'll shut up.

It's an interesting list and maybe it says something about current History lessons and how much kids listen to their parents.

Although I was born 2 years before the specified date I either know about or remember many of the things on that list.

But then again, I'm English, and have parents who bought things to last, so my dads 1970's record/tape player separate system sits quite happily in the room with the digital telly and the DVD player!

One could also comment that it works the other way, those born before 1973 have little or no knowledge of many things, including I'd imagine snap bracelets and pogs.... ho hum... that's why it's called the generation gap.

fords - number 1 all over heaven

I was born in 1980, I know the significance of Tiananmen Square et al, I have a fair collection of vinyl (dating from the early 80s - my first record was Supergran by Billy Connolly) and of course I've played Pong! Also, my first console was the Atari with the wood pannelling, the 2600 or something like that. We have 8-track at the radio station and I cannot wait to get editing on it smiley - biggrin

I have been known to program on a ZX81 smiley - biggrin

but the 64kb memory add on kept on falling out (probably had something to do with it being between the 'printer' and the 'computer') and the keyboard, even with it's special button cover, just wasn't up to much smiley - sadface
