>>>Thanks a lot! This great for all of us who would have loved to have been there but couldn't. Thanks again
>>>I haven't looked at the files, yet, but I want to say thank you for making the effort to make this available to the h2g2 community as a whole.
Wotchit, Gordon, thank you very much for your kind words. I'm hopeful that we can have more streaming on h2g2. In fact, I'm working on a very simple proposal at the moment that will enable Researchers to upload onto our servers, short minute-long MPEG film clips taken with digital cameras.
Geggs,
As for a transcript of the lecture, I'm not so sure where we stand on that one. I'll look into it and get back to you.

So we'll be able to upload video before artwork? That sounds fun! Community Video Artists!

I'm not quite sure exactly how it will work but I'll let you know when the proposal's been sorted out.

Thanks for the chance to see this. The quality is a little sketchy, but it's better than hearing about the lecture second hand and not being able to see or hear any of it.

No worries. I think getting more film clips onto the site is a good idea - especailly short clips taken by Researchers that go alongside entries that will appear in the Edited Guide. We'll do our best with streaming quality and stuff - we can always work on that - but that's the general plan, anyway.

Can't watch it at w*rk, and my home machine would likely faint
Oh, well, it's a nice thought, even if I can't watch it

Any chance of a text transcript? Like Amy, I can't view these on my 'puter :>.

Me three. I'm sat at a works computer with no soundcard obviously as I work in a call centre.

Thanks chaps.
I was lucky enough to be there, the camera was very much of a home video style.
I know the BBC can manage to film in there (The Royal Institute Christmas lectures for kids are from that lecture room) But it IS a small space, folk were sitting on the stairs for lack of room.
Getting more equipment in would have meant less seats available, and it was a fund raising event.
I could hear the lecture on real player, and I have neither a great connection, or flashy speakers.
I'm just glad to be able to listen to the lecture again.
If you are that worried maybe one of the two charities involved will be selling copies of the tape at a later stage?

Ditto, if they had had a decent camera, there would have been less space for the paying punters. They do hope to do another one on the same day next year, so keep your ears and eyes open.

I was going to do a transcript, but can't completely make out Dawkin's british accent. I got about 2 minutes before I gave up

That's about as far as I got... I could understand the accent, I just couldn't make out what he was saying over the sound of passing cars, hoovering neighbours etc.
I'll try it on my laptop the next time the network's "up" - it has amplified speakers; the ones on this machine are passive. It can still play MP3s loud enough to hear them in the kitchen, so the volume problem isn't at my end...

If the thought hadn't occurred to you, may I suggest that you channel your appreciation of The Man to:

We, of all people, should support and publicise him and The Guide.
We wouldn't and couldn't be here without them, would we; could we?

Bit tricky on the transcript front as we don't own the rights to republish Richard's speech and so the legalities might be a little tricky (hence the silence on this from us). But we're looking into this anyway.
But I suppose if someone were to write an entry about it that contained some healthy quoting - as well as background to the event - we'd be safe on that front...

Do you want me to email Richard Dawkins and ask him for a copy of his speech? It might also include the stuff he had to skip because Stephen Fry talked for so long.
