Ok, well, as you can see the official name of the post article is "Alternative Smiley -Tags". So it's not necessarily abuse, I just call it that.
Abuse as in mis-use, since they are not used in the way they were meant originally. Just think of '' (A661547) as a way of breaking up long posts, '' or <> ...

It's funny, I actually saw the first posting (lurking) when was used in that manner and didn't think anything of it, I found it perfectly natural! As if it had been happening for years!!
