A strong childhood recollection of a page in the Ripley's "Believe it or not" compendium is that a Chinese word for peace is ho-ping. Which, as I believe Ripley pointed out, is ho-pful.
*looks imploringly at nice moderator person - can this stay in?*
Arlecchino, liked the idea of a thesaurus entry. Roget's online has (spread across 2 different sense of "peace") this lovely soothing collection of words:
"calm, calmness, hush, lull, peacefulness, placidity, placidness, quiet, quietness, quietude, serenity, stillness, tranquillity, untroubledness."
*makes another aside to the nice moderator - surely as I've tinkered with this list, it can't be copyright; in any case, even Mr. Roget can't have copyrighted a simple list of words with a similar meanings, can he?*

I have caused myself some embarrassment in the past by trusting the BabelFish online translation service too much, but I'd like to think that it can manage to translate a single, simple word.
If so, 'peace' is 'paz' in both Spanish and Portuguese, 'frieden' in German, and 'pace' in Italian.

H, it doesn't really matter about the copyright, as you cited your source, anyway.

I've been trying to smarten my Personal Space up a bit, and (because of my great fondness for links) all changes on my pages get referred to the Community Team. Abnormal service at Ormondroyd's (usually) Open House should resume tomorrow, and among the changes should be a link to this page.

"[declaring war on terrorism is like saying you will stamp out shooting]" - I forget who said that now, someone in the paper, but it was something like that...

Madmaz, is that really your email addy, or a clever way of telling us you can't remember yours?
