You can't miss the hootoo gang in a pub
They'll be the ones with tables full of empty glasses, making the most noise and the ones with towels sticking out of their pockets, or over chair backs and so on

I'm terrified of going to this meet I fear I may be taken advantage of again by the provider of sleeping space later on in the evening

Okay...just so you all know, this is landmark for me.
I have been on h2g2 for three years now, started when I was 16 and I live in the middle of the U.S. No meet-ups here, needless to say. Since I joined it has been my DREAM to go to one...
This January to July I will be studying at Lancaster U. in England and for the first time EVER I can FINALLY go to a UK MEET-UP! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*sigh* I'm so excited! However, it would be GREAT if it were on a weekend, because I will be in school and taking a weekday off might be tough. Weekends would mean I could see a bit of London whilst I'm there . Also, if anyone (trustworthy, that is) has a place where me and one other person could bunk up for the weekend (if it falls on one) that would be AMAZING. Save me money on a hostel.
So, and it makes me oh so proud to say this, please sign me up for the London meet-up I'll be arriving in England Jan. 10th so late January would be great for me WOOOOO!

yeay, I think I've been on a train through lancaster twice and as far as I can remember, nah, I can't remember anything about it, but it is only 40 mins from Manchester which is good

The London prices for beer thing is a myth.... I've never paid anything more than twenty pence less than what a cheapish pint in a cheapish pub in Cambridge costs a recent survey, unfortuantley I do not have a link, found the highest prices for beer in the UK were in Norfolk and Suffolk very weird I know

Hmph. The only place I've paid almost three quid for a pint is London.
Unless you include Canada.

There are places in London where you can pay £3 for a pint. There are also places in Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Newcastle where you can do likewise.
There are places is London where you can pay less than £2 for a pint (and I don't mean 1p less than £2).

Yes.
No.
I think the price of a pint in the Princess Louise is £1.79...which seems quite reasonable.

And it's a very tasty bit of lager. Yep, a tasty lager. Go figure.

I think I'll take a piece of the action. It was fun last time. But is it compulsary to get pissed as a fart, have genie tickle your belly and end up sleeping on serephinas floor.
It's just my wife wasn't that happy with me the next day.

Okay, Freddy, that does sound okay, though Roymondo's claim is stretching credibility somewhat. Thing is, despite living in Leeds for four years I've only once or twice been to places that expensive, whereas they seem to be very easy to find in London.
I don't doubt that our guides on the meet will be able to lead us to non-extortionate hostelries, though.

Apparently it's compulsory to be tickled by Genie and sleep on Serephina's floor. It's in the house rules somewhere.
The pub that we use is a reasonably-priced one. Frankly, they're grateful for our custom. It's a City pub (i.e. the bit where all the office blocks are) that normally shuts on a Saturday night, as there's no custom in that part of London on Saturday...which is why we choose it, of course...don't want to share a pub with a bunch of tourists and binge drinkers! h2g2-ers not being binge drinkers ourselves, obviously!
