Regarding The Aces Code Of Conduct
SEF Posted Dec 17, 2003
Well I guess anyone has commented who was going to do so. I.V. already covered some of this one:
A537734 Aces' Code of Conduct
"Aces are under no obligation to be online for a specific amount of time, or to greet a certain number of people a month. All we ask is that you welcome new people when you are online and are committed to the project."
This is an odd one. People might take holidays or briefly have a lot of work. But to be a member of the scheme for months or years without greeting any or many newbies seems dishonest. It certainly doesn't qualify as being committed to the project. Yet excuses are made for these people.
If sub-editors and scouts don't meet targets they have to make way for other people who will. If it was OK to be one and not do the work then there wouldn't be a waiting list of sorts. People would just be able to join the scheme all the time while some existing members did nothing except wave their badges around. The actual target for an ACE needn't be a fixed daily one but to say that an ACE greets people and then say that they don't is contradictory.
I only joined the ACEs because the "work" visibly wasn't getting done a year ago - and there were less newbies at the time. It turned out there were lots of ACEs not greeting newbies. Some went on record saying they had no intention of doing so. Some said they did or might unsubscribe from newbie threads. Some were presumably absent and silent. Some made up other things which they pretended were ACE things - not necessarily bad things but *not* what they had volunteered to do.
Here is a previous occasion this was observed: A591581 (note also the threads and links off the forum F72139).

A537734 Aces' Code of Conduct
"The Aces work as a team."
- I.V. has already pointed out the negative aspects of that. Of course it is not limited to ACEs. Some members of other volunteer groups and established cliques on h2g2 behave the same way.
"If a member of the group is seen to stop contributing ..."
- That whole section is a bit odd. The staff say they don't follow people for the reason that they don't have time to (stated on this thread by Natalie and in other places by other staff). How are they going to see anything of the sort then. Other ACEs see it of course. When it is pointed out the staff do quite the reverse of what they say here and defend the non-contributing people (seen in the group and on those past threads). This is very similar to the way they defend a lot of transgressing volunteers - but only the "special" ones, the long-term sycophants it seems.
"it is vital that Aces are unfailingly polite to Researchers"
Again IV has already pointed out that this one is clearly allowed to be broken by certain people. However, what does it mean by researchers anyway. Are staff and other volunteers researchers. It seems to be about newbies really. It also seems slightly odd that ACEs have this magic power to scare off people by being critical or negative which other groups, the staff and general researchers don't. Obviously that only makes sense if one is talking about greeting newbies (or assisting them afterwards). So this rule looks as though it has been deliberately designed to allow the staff to discriminate against people they don't like and ignore for those they do like.

Vicky Virago - or is it?
Re: post 1637
the reason there is 'bickering' is because some researchers feel that some aces arent abiding by the house rules and that by waving their badges around they can either do as they please or, whether all of them understand the house rules or not, behave however they please but demand we act in accordance with the 'official' house rules, and this is backed by the staff 'allegedly' (i say this so as the post is left in this thread, however i have read many links provided in this thread, including some of the 1's that were yikesed because us mere researchers shouldnt see the truth on this site, i am not blind or illiterate, this thread was flawed from the start and with deliberate strategic yikesings we are seeing more positive comments rather than negative as regards aces/staff), perhaps Vicky when your application to be an ace proves succesful you will see 1st hand the differences in researcher and ace/staff rules

Re: posts 1634 - 1644 (now hidden)
when it says these posts are hidden, are they now yikesed and gone forever? just wondering as they was only quoting whats already on site, indeed some of the quotes were from the house rules so if your yikesing these threads seems like the yikeser and/or the staff member who ok'd it possibly disagrees with some of the rules, or perhaps it was just the quoting of the 'unnoficial' house rules you found offensive? maybe im reading to much into it? perhaps there was another reason for yikesing those threads? like the links provided maybe? hmmm nah cant be that cos they was only on, i believe 2 of them postings, could be wrong though i read those threads hours ago

Oh no - you get me wrong....it's just people (ie the italics) are having to keep a running comentary on this thread.
The points have now been made, and, perhaps leaving things be atm, will give the italics chance to catch up on themselves and give this time time and attention in deserves....
.....all I can see happening is people getting het up and frustrated and this doesn't help matters in my view.
Perhaps things should be left as they are and the thread stopped - then - re-issue your thoughts direct to an italic who can look into it in a full and proper manner?

"you havent missed much"
on the contrary, Localised Girl missed 5 yikesed postings referring in detail, (with links provided), to the 'official' And the 'Unnofficial' rules of this site, had you of read all/any of them before they was purposefully yikesed you might actually of obtained some understanding of what this thread is about which would go some way to justifying your comments and opinions in this thread, with exception to your interest in Dr.Who of course as this obviously isnt what this thread is about, though i dont doubt you do have something worthwhile to say on the matter of Dr. Who

V.V. post 1556
You are missing the point. Jimster actually asked for the points to be made and said he would get back to them. I guess he ignored or didn't see them the first time round or in the hidden posts and doesn't want to look at the backlog - a common enough problem. Whether or not he has any intention of taking points seriously or wants to continue to pretend that anything the staff and special volunteers do wrong should be excused and/or regarded as bygones remains to be seen.

Oops - that was meant to be a reply to post 1656 not 1556. I did open another window to check the number but it was so horrendously slow that in the end I never remembered to go back and see it before posting!

I must admit to not having read the backlog and haven't been scrolling through the endless post on here
Ah well - each to their own and I wish you luck in your quest.
