There are quite a number of Aces out there, and they all interpret their job differently. I will try to clarify my opinion about what it means to me to be an Ace. Please note the 'to me'...
Some(actually quite a lot of) Aces greet the newcomers to h2g2. This is not my cup of tea for the simple reason that I do not have the time to follow up on any replies I might receive from said new researchers. I am sorry about this but hey, that's just the way it is...
Because I have the advantage of being online very frequently, I have chosen to take a different path: Whenever I come across really heated arguments I tend to keep an eye on them. Mind you: I *do not* butt in on every conversation that I don't like! My telephonebill would be as high the Empire State Building, as would my frustration-level.
Besides, who would want to continuously monitor the whole of h2g2 ? Certainly not me!
So No Thank You !
In some cases however, the Aces have an obligation to try and pour some oil on the water. I usually do this by starting a new thread on the researcher(s) page, asking if he/she would be interested in a discussion/talk.
Although I may be criticized for it : I tend to use at least the same level of politeness as the researcher I am talking to. This is because I am of the opinion that if you express yourself in a certain way you should be able to stand other people who talk to you in the same manner.
Please note : I do not swear or use abusive language, because I truly believe that doing so is the sign of a lack of civilization. I make an exception for "Belgium" though...
Of course there is only so much that an Ace can try to do. Personally I do not see the use of extending a hand only to have it bitten off and then extending it again and again and again and... When that happens I will simply say "have a nice life" and, if I feel it is necessary, I will just inform the appropriate people at h2g2.
This is also the moment that I stop responding to said "Firehazards".
Enough is enough and I am not getting paid for this job...
Of course I hope that this whole article is completely superfluous...
