First past the post is the system used in a lot of coutries where the person with the most votes wins. Proportional representation is far more complex and invloves people voting for the candidates in order of who's their favourite.
We could also use the French system where there'd be two elections; the two candidates with the highest votes after the first round are put up against one another for a second election.
The problem is that nobody set about any ground rules about what sort of election system we'll be using.

How about the Dutch system: each party is proportionally represented inparliamnet according to the number of votes, and then parties try to form a majority of seats in parliament, called the coalition. The coalition then sub-divides the ministerial posts.
