So what we have happening at Mt. St. Helens is an escalating eruption, a small event causing a subsequent larger event followed by an even larger event. What is happening is water is trickling down through the cracks in the volcano finally reaching a point that is so hot it explosively vaporizes causing the crack to be slightly enlarged allowing more water to get there faster causing an even larger reaction eventually resulting in an eruption. The steam plumes of the last few days show exactly this pattern. Each steam plume will be larger until the lava dome collapses dumping the glacier and crater lake into the volcano causing a huge steam and ash cloud fallowed by large amounts of lava. Could get interesting.
