I think the gas freezing problem depends on which gas. My sister nearly died living in a caravan on winter while she was doing up a cottage in the wilds, cos the gas line to the heater froze. So the heater went out but when the temperature rose again she was nearly gassed. Can't remember whether it was butane or propane but one of them freezes at a higher temperature than the other. Then there's LPG which is probably different again.
I expect some smart a*se will come along and correct me before long, though...

Ah, I see... Around here, you either get natural gas which is the kind that's piped in underground, or you get liquid propane, the kind in the tanks. Never heard of either of those freezing up, but I could just be misinformed.

Don't remember having that problem in South Dakota, but I think the lines were all buried. *shrug* I was in 6th grade at the time.

Most likely out in the sticks (read: country) there would be no gaslines, so they would have had tanks, but they could also have insulated the lines to the house or buried them if the tank was not right by the house.
