I think italian, french, spanish, and half of english is based on latin. Roman empire and all that. And there are a lot of similarities between some english and spanish words.

As a youngster when I went to Spain, I had my first with a boy who I spoke some Latin to. It was amazing how much he understood, because of the similarities of the languages. Even my was Latin
