De Zoch kütt! (The parade is about to appear!)
The Carnival Season has begun, and Germany has /lots/ of peculiarities here!

Hopefully this one will make it through the process right before 'Dirty Thursday'...

Great article, if I ever saw one! Couldn't have phrased it better myself. Comprehensive and detailed. And I agree that it should be attempted to get it up into the edited part of the guide before the actual event.
Cheers!

As an American who found himself unsuspectingly plunged into this event by conspiring german friends, I would say your article is very accurate. It has my recommendation.
Have you thought of doing an article on other German festivals, such as Lukasmarkt in Mayen and other events that break that ill-deserved stereotype of "serious" Germans.

Great entry and really comprehensive but I'm sorry to have to say the "reputation of Germans as orderly, obedient, sober, and humourless people"? - gone forever! Now we all know the truth about you! Now the jinn is out of the bottle and you'll never get it back in. Just remember that -- we all know what you are really like now, so there's no point in you coming over all serious. The truth is out. Get this in the Guide quick, before Helaaf has time to change his mind!

I think they like to cultivate this image. But if only the rest of the world new... For example, there are German Bachelor Clubs whose only purpose is to drink as much beer as possible. Sometimes a club will host a party and invite rival clubs. The rival clubs then try to drink as much as possible at the host club's expense and so deplete their funds and make them poor. I'm not making this up; Germans told me!

Very good entry. Chock-a-block with information and entertainment. I expect anyone who reads this will plan their next trip to Germany to coincide with the Carnival Season (unless they're boring and sensible of course)
I noticed a little tiny error that you might care to edit: "men are good advised to wear an old tie" - you should change the 'good' to 'well'.
Great stuff. Hope it gets picked by a discerning scout soon!

Not only is everything accurate, but he hasn't missed anything. At least, I couldn't think even of one tiny thing to add.
Brilliant brilliant brilliant, thorough and must be in by 22 February.
I think it is natural that people who are restrained all year have to let their trousers down once in a while, which explains why this tradition has continued despite all the setbacks over the centuries and even today, when there is less poverty etc and people *could* party any time they want, the Germans do take things in general more seriously and work harder (or at least think they are working harder).
This explains why it is so extreme.
Do also look at the page Bossel has created specifically for the purposes of writing this entry.

Well, the matter of hogbladders ('Saublodern') in the Schwäbisch-Allemannische Fassenet has been raised now, and I hoped it would go unnoticed, but somebody out there opened Pandora's box, and the trousers are to be lowered even further now... uh oh, my gosh, and I was thinking of being an ambassador/representant thingy

il viaggiatore, you seem to want that image destroyed /completely/, ruined, burned and quartered. Hmmm, we'll see. Nockherberg is the next fixed point on the calendar...

i just don't think stereotypes are fair to anyone. i know many americans avoid germany because of what they've heard of the place (what we're taught about your country is not always entirely flattering), and so miss out on a jolly good time.
