A Conversation for Carnival in Germany

I may have overlooked a reference to it in this article, but I was once at a carnival in the Black Forest (a village called Elzach) in about March and they had these guys dressed up in red suits wearing ugly wooden masks, tricorner hats covered in seashells with a red pom-pom on each corner, carrying sticks with actual bladders attatched on the end, which they ran around hitting people with.
Can anyone enlighten me here; what is the significance of all that?
Good fun though!

Yes, they /are/ hog's bladders ('Saublodern'), filled with peas, and are to be knocked on people's heads. I had hope to have that bit go unnoticed.... naaah, didn't work
Actually, I don't know what it's meant to be good for, but once Pandora's box is open, I shall go out and research the bit!

I've done some rather lengthy research and updated the entry with a new chapter. Hitting people with bladders is one of the 'tricks' those jesters play on the visitors. Don't ask me about taste please
