If you keep the pill strips in a zip-lock bag, they won't go anywhere. You can pop them while they are in the bag.
I keep a small pile of edged devices around the house and find a stanley knife very useful for when my paws can't open a package.
On the other subject: When I was shaving, I used a boar bristle brush and a tube of Palmolive shaving, um, stuff. For some strange reason, the tube is the same shape, size and cap-type as my tooth paste. I'll leave it to you to imagine what happened, but I will say this, shaving with toothpaste is a very interesting experience but not vice versa...
