I was never allowed a shell suit when I was little, due to their flammability. It's a fact that I'm eternally grateful to my parents for as there are no photos of me as a child that are embarrassing for that particular reason. Lots that are embarrassing for other reasons though smiley - biggrin

Had a colleague once who arrived at w*rk quite badly burned - facially at least.

Turned out he'd attended a BBQ at the weekend, at which he'd worn a shell suit. Apparently, it spontaneously combusted even though he wasn't anywhere near the BBQ apparatus. Thought was that a charcoal fragmented had ejected itself from the grid and landed on him.

<< A reserve goalie for Coventry City FC who never got beyond the bench, David Icke, footballer turned messiah, claimed that wearing a shellsuit of a certain shade of turquoise was the path to enlightenment, with predictable mocking ensuing. >>

Could you possibly switch that around to read: Footballer turned messiah David Icke, a reserve goalie for Coventry City FC who never got beyond the bench, claimed that wearing a shellsuit of a certain shade of turquoise was the path to enlightenment, with predictable mocking ensuing.

Thanks Bea, I'm still gigglingsmiley - ok

Aside from the fact that this is all-over guideworthy, I'm especially impressed with the use of "vanguarding". Consider compounding "self lined" to "self-lined".

I'm not used to seeing Entries start with a header so my advice to you would be to take it out. I also feel that there are a lot of stereotypes described in this Entry, which is an interesting link to make. However, do be careful with stereotypes.

'Pupils in some schools are not allowed to take part in science class if they are in one of these fire hazards.'

In all the schools I've taught in England, pupils wouldn't be allowed to wear garments like shell-suits in classes anyway. Most schools have school uniform or at least 'acceptable dress codes', which exclude jeans. I'm sure shell suiits wouldn' be allowed in noremal classes and DEFINITELY NOT in science classes where their fire hazard would be well-recognised. smiley - 2cents

It was taken from a new report on the BBC that I discovered when researching the topic, so I stand over the "some" qualifier.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

Is it still so flammable? I would have thought health and safety laws would have meant it had to be less likely to engulf the wearer in melted plastic should it come in to contact with flames nowadays?

Well, to my knowledge, they haven't changed the material from which they're made smiley - erm. As I think you hinted in your Entry, sheel suits were 'of their time' and so now are somewhat passe. smiley - erm
