I am in two minds about this beer. On the one hand it is sold on a somewhat dubious sounding connection with Ripon Abbey, which has (as far as I can tell) no real connection with the brewing of beer in general and this beer in particular - something of which I am always suspicious.
On the other hand, it is one of the most delicious ales I have ever sampled. It has a rich flavour which belies its 5.8% strength, deliciously fruity overtones and a finish which is bitter enough to be clean yet at the same time mellow and sweet. It slips down just beautifully, and I could happily drink gallons of the stuff.
Overall the brewers, Daleside brewery of Yorkshire, have produced an ale in the finest traditions of their county. I heartily recommend it - available now at a Waitrose near you.
