im what i like to refer to as a spiritual atheist. i believe that all people are basically good and fail to understand why we need the concept of any 'God' to have a peaceful world. all in favour of religion in its true form, but it seems that at present the world would be better off without.
.. 'religion is morality in principle, morality is religion in practice'

But religion and God aren't the same question . Are they?

Interesting article. Tt seems to me that the passage "Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son... " could also simply mean that she Jesus was her first born.

Could be, Guy. But such evidence as there is seems to indicate that Jesus had older siblings. Possibly James, according to the Bible. Someone here will know the reference I'm sure.

Caroline.
I don't think we need religion to figure out our idea of God.
I still see it as a control mechanism.
The fact that there are so many diverse and divided religions, would seem to prove doesn't exist rather than a reality.
Can they all be right, or right for now?

Well the word god didn't exist in that last message , Whoops.

Though not necessarily a bad control mechanism. The moral foundations of most religions are based on empathy for our fellow human beings. Or, as the saying goes "do unto others as you would have done to yourself." Or something.
And from such empathy comes more solid guidelines like "don't kill", "don't nick other people's stuff", etc.

Hasslefree, I think maybe God sends down prophets with a message that is relevant to the time it is sent, so as the world changes, so do the messages. If you're a Mum or Dad then you don't say the same thing to your children no matter what they do!

Unless your name starts with Just and ends with in!
I'll go along with Spiritual Atheism. The Tao is not a God but it is the source of all things.

Pell said Brown Hatted- Guy!
Perhaps we dont need religion to understand God these days, but several thousand years ago we may have been a little stuck. Thats not to say that religion is now redundant though. is it?
