I play the piano, guitar and accordeon. My main instrument is my voice, though. I'm a soprano and I've been in different choirs since 2000 and occasionally sang in a band in church. I've done solo and small ensemble performances (up to 6 voices).
I'd love to find a new choir (planning to live in Edinburgh in a few months time) and earn money with singing. Any tips on how to get both are most welcome.
My favourite composers are Mozart (classic) and U2 (contemporary).

Hello smashinggracenote. I've added you to the guild membership page.
A quick search of the internet suggests that (as expected) there are quite a lot of choirs in Edinburgh you might contact. However, earning money at singing is another matter ... unless you count busking/begging on the streets with that guitar or accordion.

Gargletooth Posted Feb 26, 2009
Hi! My name is Garlgletooth but you can call me gargie. I almost play the drums, and I try to play the bass (though not entirely successfully.. Those darn slaps are killing me..) I am the only person I personally know that play's the jaw harp, or as I call it marafeti {translation from greek/cypriot: do-thingy}. I also wish to learn how to play the didgeridoo, though I have no idea how..
I am a fun of jazz, blues, classic rock, greek rock, and much more, extending to pretty much everything, but , perhaps,bad-made pop..
I am trying to find the perfect instrument, i.e. one that takes two weeks to learn, two years to perfect and two centuries to totally master; wile still allowing you to improvise easily and jump in to any song. The jaw harp came close, though its lack of volume is rather disappointing... Also any recommendations on artists I MUST check out are always welcome, as are any tips to widen my musical horizons...
Sorry for the babbling, and I wish for a wonderful time here at the musicians guild....................................................

Hello Gargletooth, I've added you to the membership page (A438068) now.
I doubt there's a single perfect instrument - certainly not to match those requirements for everyone. Some people learn faster than others, for a start. The piano's very versatile, great for improvisation and joining in but is not very portable and is likely to take most people more than two weeks to do much. Strummed guitar or ukulele might meet your needs quite well. If you wanted to join in on the melody line though, you'd be better off in the wind instruments - with recorder and flageolet being easy ones.

Hi all,
I play keyboards and acoustic guitar - not sure what level, I call it 'dabbling'
Also interested in the recording process & song-writing; have just posted a couple of pieces on h2g2 for review (A48346040 & A48886168).
Influences - electronic and/or any bands with flashing lights - more info in my PS.
Would also like to sing & site-read music, but struggling - needs too much commitment now; should have paid more attention at school

Hello phil_tipping, I've added you to the membership list now.
NB1 With regard to the pieces you've posted on this site with prominent personal copyright notices, you should probably double-check that you agree with point 6 onwards of the local Terms Of Use:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/terms/
NB2 "site-read" should be "sight-read". Definitely should have paid more attention at school.

Ok cheers SEF, and thanks for the correction - too much use of the word 'site' as in 'web-site' has clouded the brain.
Thanks also for NB2; I had to read them several times, but as I understand it the copyright remains with me so I could still market the pieces. If the BBC adapt them for their own use, then that can only be good publicity.... or have I missed something? Could their adaptations restrict my own development & marketing of the pieces?
Phil.

Sorry Danny. Obviously incorreclty extended the user name, thought it was your good self.
Being properly attired is over-rated sometimes.

almaak - the Reincarnation Posted Sep 21, 2009
Dear Madam or Sir,
A consideration of my application would make a poor struggling (mostly with his laziness) amateur guitar player extremely happy. My interests in music range from prehistoric drum beats to devastating massive multiplayer experimental symphonies.
Your reply would be much anticipated.
Yours sincerely,
A. the Reincarnation
p.s. Some knowledge in HTML and GuideML present. Would be happy to help.

Hello there, almaak
I'll just add your reincarnated self to the membership list next to your previous (deceased?) self.
Any idea what you died of/from? Could it have been anthrax in those prehistoric drums? In which case you might be safer sticking to the MMESs - unless they truly are devastating. Perhaps there's some middle ground ...

History:
Eb Tenor Horn
Bb Trumpet
Drums: orchestral and punk
Fender precision bass
Aria Pro2 electric
Epiphone acoustic
Various pipes and whistles
All this went when I had a stroke. Nowadays I just sing choral bass in a variety of choirs. If anyone out there needs encouragement about how anyone with a disability can be a musician I would be happy to discuss.

Any advice for a hard of hearing musical wanabee?
I never was a musician, but always musical, had a guitar, always had tin whistles, gave up listening to and playing anything about 10 years ago after losing my hearing, ( still have enough to hear but not to listen to the delicate sounds of music-especially piano[sounds very strange nowdays lol] ). i was maybe thinking of giving percussion a go; if Evenyn Glennie can play so well without here hearing - maybe i could at least play well enough to have some fun?
I was also thinking of maybe something load like a brass instrument?
Any advice - gratefully recieved.

Taiko drumming would be a good one. There are a few workshops in the UK. It would be good because for one it can be very, very loud and two because the nature of a lot of the drums is often that they have a lot of physical feed back (the sticks vibrate in your hands like a bastard) at he frequencies you hear or they are just so loud and deep you don't need to hear them with your ears.
You could also try using a stick/ruler in your mouth pressed onto a piano or something and use that to compose ala beethoven.
